John Alexander Reese (b. 1845, d. 1926)

Information obtained from John's Compiled Service Records at the National Archives in Washington, DC (M267, Roll 142):
John enlisted into Company L, Orr's Regiment, South Carolina Rifles at Camp Pickens, Sandy Springs, Anderson County, South Carolina, on July 20, 1861, with his father, Elihu - John was 15.From November 1861 until April 1862, John's Muster Roll cards stated that he was a musician/company drummer, but after April he was only listed as Private.On July 14, 1863, John was captured at Falling Waters, Maryland, during Lee's retreat south after Gettysburg.From July 23, 1863, until August 8, 1863, John was held at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC, but was then transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, and remained there until he was exchanged on March 3, 1864.John was then appointed 4th Corporal on October 1, 1864, and was listed as 3rd Corporal on the November & December 1864 Muster Roll card.Then on April 2, 1865, (one week before the war ended at Appomattox) John was captured again at the South Side Rail Road in Virginia, was taken briefly to City Point, Virginia, and then was transferred to Hart's Island in New York Harbor on April 7, 1865.John remained there until June 15, 1865, when he signed the Oath of Allegiance which provided his physical description as 5 ft. 6 1/2 in. tall with light complexion, brown hair and grey eyes.
