Evelynwas born in Berlin, Germany in October 1930.Her father, Henry Chaim, was a dentist, and her mother, Else, a bookkeeper in her brother Hans Palnitzky’s business.Evelyn’s brother, Erwin, is 2 1/2 years older.Evelyn attended public school in Berlin until November 9th 1938----Kristallnacht.She then attended several different Jewish schools which met erratically because there was little heat in winter and because schools for Jews were closing, and teachers and students were leaving the country. In September of 1940 her family escaped Nazi persecution by emigrating to Shanghai China (which was then under Japanese jurisdiction) via Russia, Siberia and Manchuria.
It was in Shanghai that 10 year old Evelyn learned English at the Shanghai Jewish Youth Association School, built and endowed by Mr. Kadoorie, an Iraqui Jew. The family stayed in Shanghai six and a half years.Dr. Chaim was able to practise dentistry to support the family during those years. Because of a favorable German immigration quota, and the granting of an affidavit secured through friends in Denver, they were able to emigrate to the U.S. in April 1947. Evelyn had passed the Cambridge Exam (a high school equivalency exam) in Shanghai and on that basis entered Denver University in the fall of 1947.She worked summers as a counselor at a Jewish day camp and taught Jewish history at Sunday school.
She was graduated fromD.U. in the spring of 1951 with a major in chemistry and minors in zoology, education, and theater. That summer, in Denver, she married Morton Panish whom she had met in an organic chemistry class. They took up residence in East Lansing, Michigan where Mort attended graduate school and she taught 4th grade in the Lansing public schools. Evelyn's teaching career was cut short by the arrival of son Steve in 1953.The Panish's moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where Mort worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.Son Paul was born there in 1955. In 1957 they moved to N. Andover, Massachusetts where daughter Debbie was born in 1957.After 6 1/2 years in New England Mort took a job with Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ, and they moved to Springfield, New Jersey where they currently reside.
Evelyn was active in the P.T.A. where she was president at the Kittredge School in N. Andover, and later in N.J at the Walton and atthe Gaudineer Schools in Springfield. The Panish family joined Temple Shaarey Shalom where she served on many committees and as vice president. For 30 years she has been a member of the volunteer choir which sings at Friday night services and for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs on Saturday. She also has been singing with Kol Dodi, the Midrasha Choir, since its inception in 1992.She was an active member of the Springfield League of Women Voters, helpd publish their bulletin, and ran their annual theater party. Sponsored by the Springfield Recreation Dept., Evelyn taught Rhythms and Movement classes for pre-schoolers in the 70's, and Modern Dance for Children after school. She also taught creative rhythm classes for the J.C.C. in Plainfield, the Giant Step Enrichment Program for the Temple Shaarey Shalom Nursery School, and at Temple Beth Ahm's pre-school.
The teaching of senior exercise classes evolved from Evelyn's studies of Modern Dance at Denver University,Michigan State University, and Union County College and from workshops in dance for older adults by Erna Caplow-Lindner and Leah Harpaz.Evelyn first started teaching senior exercise classes for the Township of Springfield; then went on to teach at the J.C.C. of Central N.J. in Scotch Plains. For the past 9 years she has taught for the Township of Clark and for the Union County Regional Adult School in Kenilworth. She also taught Israeli folk dancing for seniors at the Ivy Hill J.C.C. and at the YM-YWHA of West Orange (now the J.C.C. Metrowest).
