Notes for JOHN BURRIS:
There are numerous spellings for our BURRIS, some were interchangeable within a family: Buris, Burris, Burriss, Buras, Burras, Burres, Burress, Burrus, Burruss as well as Burroughs and Burrows.
The fact that members of the same family may have used different spellings makes it difficult to trace family ties.I have done my best to include as many sources as possible.I have also included speculative information purely for interest.

From a Burris Family newsletter dated July, 1991:
"John Burris: The original John Burris of 1738 tombstone was found in 1975 in Boxley, IN.The story is a farmer wanted to clear off his land for farming, this also included the old cemetery property where John Burris was buried. The tombstones had been thrown into a ditch.Phillip Cline and others brought suit against the farmer to sop any further destruction, and restore the cemetery to its original condition. The tombstones were then placed into the farmers basement awaiting the court's decision. The United Stated government has installed a Revolutionary Veterans stone for John Burris, in honor of his service during the Revolutionary War...."
