Historical Account of 1790 IndianAmbush
(Wilderness Trail, Kentucky)
"Thestory I have on Sarah Shipley Mitchell (1778-1855) is fromBaylor's Washington County, Kentucky History. "In the early summer of1790, the families of Robert Mitchell (Jr.) (1742-1791), David McCordand others, set off for Kentucky. In the Mitchell group, there were Robert andhis aged mother, Mary Caldwell, Robert Mitchell, his wife, NaomiShipley (1748-1790), and their children, John, Daniel, Robert, and Sarah.Another Mitchell group was that of Adam Mitchell, brother of Robert, and hisfamily.
Whilethe emigrant caravan was yet some miles from Crab Orchard in Lincoln County, they were attacked by Indians. Naomi Mitchell was mortally wounded. Herhusband stood by and succeeded in driving off the savages, thus preventing herfrom being scalped. The other members of the party scattered. DanielMitchell (III) and his sister, Sarah Mitchell, were together. Comingto a log spanning a small stream, Daniel urged his sister to cross over, butshe, being afraid, hesitated. The young man then sprang onto the log to showthat it was safe to cross and bade his sister to follow him. Still the girlhesitated and by that time several of the Indians had caught up with the fugitives. The redskins seized the girl and Daniel seeing that he could not save hissister, fled to save his own life. After some time spent in pillaging the campof the whites, the Indians left, carrying with them the captured SarahMitchell. As soon as the escaped emigrants learned that the Indians haddeparted, they returned to the camp site. Robert Mitchell, Jr. came carryinghis wounded wife, Naomi Shipley. None of the others had suffered injury.slowly and sadly the company moved on to the fort at Crab Orchard. Very soonafter reaching the fort, Naomi Mitchell died. A party of men was raised topursue the Indians in hope of rescuing Sarah but after traveling many miles andnot catching up with the redskins, the party returned to the fort.
Forseveral days the bereaved emigrants tarried at Crab Orchard. The McCords thenproceeded to Madison County and the Mitchells to Mercer and Nelson Counties. There is a tradition in the Berry family that the family of Robert Mitchellspent some time with the family of Richard Berry, Sr. in Nelson (nowWashington) County.
The agedmother of Robert Mitchell, Jr. probably went to live with her brother, RobertCaldwell, of Mercer, and it is said she remained in his home until the day ofher death some years later. The tradition records are somewhat uncertain concerning the death of RobertMitchell, Jr. One story has it that he lost his life by drowning in swollenClinch River while in pursuit of the Indians who had killed his wife and stolenhis daughter. From another source we learn that it was a year or two later thathe was drowned in Clinch River, while making a return trip to North Carolina.Whatever may have been the manner of his death, we do know that he was dead bythe year 1793 when he is mentioned as 'Robert Mitchell, deceased' in a letterfrom his aged mother to Governor Isaac Shelby.
In 1795, theyear after Daniel Mitchell (III) married, word came to him that his sister,Sarah had been located in Canada. He went to that country, secured his sister'srelease, and brought her back to Washington County.
SarahMitchell was placed in the home ofRichard Berry, Sr. to be the companion of her cousin, NancyHanks." Some descendants, Robert Mitchell Thompson, said that it wasdue to the treaty by Anthony Wayne with the Pottawatomies that Sarah wasreleased. Florence Thompson Lovejoy wrote that it was the Wayne Treaty also. Idon't know if this has been researched or not." The Nancy Hanksreferred to is, of course Abraham Lincoln's mother, and one branch of thefamily was instrumental in disproving the claims often made by his opponentsthat Lincoln was illegitimate (a matter of some importance at the time).
I'vealways enjoyed the story of Sarah Mitchell, which my grandmother told me as asmall child”

Dad...SOLVED! Seebelow for all of the juicy details.
I wascorrect...Elveree Mitchell (Mamee's Great Grandma) is the GRANDDAUGHTER toDaniel Mitchell (II) and brother, Robert Mitchell, Jr. (m. Naomi Shipley, sister to Lucy and Mary Shipley), who, along with their mother, Mary Caldwell, were brutally attacked by Indians upon arriving KY from NC. It was RobertJr.'s (Elveree's Great Uncle) son and daughter, Robert (III) and Sarah who ranfor their lives during the attack.
a. Elveree Mitchell is in fact a descendant of the Mitchell's who were attacked
by the Indians in 1790.
b. Elveree is the granddaughter of Daniel Mitchell II (m. Judith Prewitt).
c. Elveree's Great Grandparents are Daniel Mitchell I (m. Mary
Caldwell)....their children, DanielII (Elveree's GGF father) and
brother, RobertMitchell, Jr. led their aging mother, Mary Caldwell in the
McCord, Mitchell,Shipley party as they entered KY. This was the party
attacked by the Indians that are in thehistory books!
