Stephen Gaines and his wife, Martha Patsy Gaines lived in South Carolina for a time after they married, By 1817,they had moved to Illinois and settled near the Wabash River in Crawford Co. According to the 1820 US Census in Crawford Co, they had 2 sons under 10 years, 1 between 10 and 16, 3 daughters under 10, and 2 daughters between 10 and 16. Therefore it is possible they had 5 or 6 children when they came to Illinois. In 1820, Stephen's family was the only Gaines household in Crawford, Co.
By the 1830 Census there was one other Gaines Family in the Census, the household of Nimrod Gaines, whom I believe to be the oldest son, and who would have been the male between 10 and 16 in the 1820 Census.
By 1840, the number of Gaines' households had increased to 4 in Crawford Co. These included
Stephen, Nimrod, James and a John Gaines from Virginia who had arrived between 1830 and 1840. James was the second son of Stephen and Martha.
Between the 1840 and 1850 Census, Stephen died and his estate was finalized in 1848. There was no mention of his widow, and she did not appear in the 1850 Census, however she was found in the land index as having negotiated a deed in 1852.
Based on the above data from the US Census for the years, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 and an
index of marriages in Crawford Co covering the same period, a probable list of the issue for Stephen
and Martha (Patsy) Gaines would include the persons listed below. While this is not to be considered
documentary proof, at least these persons were counted in the household for Stephen and Martha
through the 1840 Census.
Recently, further marriage records for the Gaines families in Crawford Co have been obtained, which
further substantiate this reseach regarding the children and some grandchildren of Stephen and Martha Gaines.
