Uncle Tom Barlow was born in Dundee, Scotland and came to America in 1908.He served in WW I, as a PFC in the 111th ambulance company,113th Sanitary Train,28th Division.He enlisted in the ArmyMay 31, 1917.He served in France from May 19, 1918 to May 9, 1919.He was discharged at Camp Dix, NJ on May 21, 1919.His Army S. N. was 1260990.He was paid in full at the time of his discharge, $94.18 which included a $60.00 bonus.He was awarded medals for several campaigns that he participated in:Aisne-Marne, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne-Marne.These battles were in France.
He returned to the Block Shop at Armstrong where he worked for 50 years.He lived and died in the Barlow family home at 238 E. Ross St., Lancaster.
In the days before cattle trucks, Tom and Bill Barlow used to drive cattle from the stock yards to many butcher shops in the city of LancasterThere the butchers slaughtered and processed the meat in the "corner butcher shop".It was usually two or three animals at a time.They used to drive large numbers of animals to the Kunzler Co. on Manor Street.This was a difficult "drive" because of the distance and the greater number of animals.
