"The Governor at the beginning of the Civil War was John Willis Ellis, a native of RowanCounty.He attended school at Randolph Macon and graduated from the University of N. C.He took office as governor in 1859 as a Democrat and a supporter of internal improvements, having served for three sessions in the House of Commons.Just prior to the beginning of the Civil War, Governor Ellis proposed a conference of southern states to prepare for war.when President Lincoln demanded troops for the union, Governor Ellis reacted by calling a special session of the legislature.The legislature backed Ellis and idea for a convention to declare secession.On May 20, 1861, an ordinance for secession was passed for North Carolina to leave the Union.Ellis was forced to retire due to poor health and died on July 7, 1861, prior to the end of the war."
