Roland M. Lichtenstein
Niskayuna -- Roland M. Lichtenstein, 88, died at his home in Niskayuna on
Tuesday, January 21, 2003, after a long illness.
Roland left Darmstadt, Germany in 1938, and received a doctorate in physics
from MIT after writing his dissertation on a military transport ship taking
him to his US Army signal corps posting in Japan. He worked at GE in
Schenectady before joining the physics faculty at RPI in the 1950's.
Professor Lichtenstein made weekly visits to the Schenectady Public Library
for over 50 years, and was also a regular patron of the Folsom Library at
RPI and the Union College Library. He volunteered at Hillside and Van
Antwerp Schools in Niskayuna. Roland was an enthusiast of mountains, maps,
mathematics and generic beer.
Mr. Lichtenstein's wife of 55 years, Pearl, passed away in 2001.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann Cherlow of Arlington, VA, her husband
Jay and their sons, Mike and Danny; and by his son, Woody of Belmont, MA,
his wife Sue and their sons, Ben, Sam and Eli.
Services will be held at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union Street,
Schenectady, on Friday January 24, 2003, at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will follow in the Workmen's Circle Cemetery in Rotterdam.
