John C Coney Family Patriarch - My Genealogy Search
John C. Coney and Barbara Dillon Children: Jacob, James, Elizabeth, Linnie, William, Delia, Early, Myrtis, John L., Uylsses and Dockey John C. Coney and Jane Hornsby Magee Ardella, Van Leslie, Lillie Viola I am searching for family connections of Ulysses Coney,Sr and Lillean Edna Hughes. Lillean was born in New Orleans, LA and Ulysses from Pike County, MS born in 1892 and 1896. They were married Oct. 2,1915. Lillean Hughes' father was George Hughes, we called him Grandpa George, her mother was Daisy Webber. Daisy Webber died in 1935. Ulysses Coneys' father was John C. Coney,Sr (born abt. 1848). John C. Coney,Sr. had two or more families, one with Barbara Dillon in which there were 11 children. Later with Jane Hornsby Magee (Jesse Magee first husband) in which there were three children. As his death certificate states he was last married to a woman named Mary(Mollie Jackson)I've found marriage records for Jane and Mollie but only a record of divorce for Barbara Dillon. These families lived separate but in close proximity to each other. The history I have of these families are from stories passed on to our generation and research of local court houses and libraries. Jesse Magee'sparents were: Jacob Magee and Chaney. They were found in the 1870 Pike Co, MS census. Jacob is 38 and Chaney is 30. Their children are Martha 13, Jesse 14, Sam 11, Abram 7, Eliza 4, Henry 2 and Allen 8 months. This journey began in 1998. I hosted a reunion on May 28-30, 1999 in Magnolia, MS during the Memorial Holiday weekend. It was a memorable event with relatives from all over the U.S. attending. It is something many of us won't forget. We got to know relatives whom I had never met and reconnected with those we'd lost touch. I've been able to trace our history back to my great-grandfather John C Coney. He is connected to George Coney in the 1870 census. Definite proof from John's death certificate shows that Patsy (Grandma Pattie) was John's natural mother. She was a housekeeper (slave) in that area.. Her father was John Quin.It is likely that George and Patsy were slaves. John Coneyis listed as their neighbor. He is 21 years old and married to Barbara.I estimate their marriage at or around 1870. Also living in George and Patsy(Quin) Coney s home is Silas who is listed as 19 born May 1850, sisters Clara (Chloe) and Ginny, brothers Jesse and Leander born about 1877. John was born in May 1848. When the Civil War ended in 1865 John was about 17 years old. John Coney was described as being light skinned by his grandchildren. He "looked white" many said. He was remembered riding a white horse overseeing the fields. I was also told that John C. Coney as a young man was the buggy driver for his "White" father. There was speculation that John was fathered by his white owner. Remember, he was born abt. 1848 or 49 right in the midst of the slavery south and he knew the lay of the land very well. John Coney married Barbara Dillon. They had 10 children: Jacob, Elizabeth, Delia, William, Early, James, Lennie, John Coney,Jr. Myrtis Matthews, and my grandfather Ulysses Coney,SR.Two other children died, one in childbirth and another Dockey at a young age (before age 10). He also fathered Arie Coney and Hattie Coney. Their mother's name was Maggie Garner Burris. He married Jane Hornsby Magee and fathered Ardella, Van Leslie and Lillie Coney. I invite any information that YOU would like to share with me regarding our anscestors. I welcome any information from and about the Coney's in the Pike County, MS area whether they be white or black. Uylsses (Lish) Coney was my grandfather. He was afarmer in the Magnolia, MS area. His brother Myrtis Coney owned a store call A and L Coney Grocery. His sons were educators in the Pike County area...their names Albert and Allen. 2012 Coney Family Reunion, New Orleans, LA:Father's Day Weekend, June 1 | John C Coney Family Patriarch - My Genealogy Search Updated September 11, 2011 |
