Notes for ALEXANDER POPE:
State Elections: Returns of Member to Serve in the Ensuing Legislature:Alexander Pope, State Representative, Wilkes Co., Ga. October 11, 1815.(Milledgville Nwsppr).Alexander was also a member of the Delaware Society of the Cincinatti (Order of Cincinnatus).
On March 3, 1817, "An Act Establishing Alabama Territory"was approved by President James Madison. Also on that day Secretary of the Treasury William H. Crawford wrote to President-Elect James Monroe regarding governmental appointments for the newterritory. With respect to Alexander he stated "Alexander Pope, the brother in law of Dr. [William Wyatt] Bibb, has long been recommended for one of these offices. He is well known to me, and there are but few men better qualified both in talents and integrity for the office of Register of Receiver. He would prefer the northern office, as he new resides in Madison County.Alexander was thus appointed Register of the Land Office in the District of Alabama in June 1817.His bond and oath to support the U. S. Constitution was transmitted to the Comptroller of the Treasury in Washington D.C., Josiah Meigs, on July 24, 1817.
Much correspondence between Alexander and Josiah Meigs of the US Govt. Land Office in Wash. DC is recorded in "The Territorial Papers of the United States, Vol. XVIII, The Territory of Alabama, 1817-1819.The letters adhere almost entirely to matters pertaining to the office of Register with one notable exception. On 10/14/1818 Alexander wrote to Joshia Meigs in part:
"I returned to this place the day before yesterday in the evening after one of the most painful
journeys of my life.On my way from Huntsville to Fort Jackson I was taken sick in the Cahaba
valley and traveled two days with a burning fever upon me when i reached the Town of Alabama.
After remaining there a few days I thought I had gotten well enough to continue my journey on
here butwhen I reached Mr. Barnett's at line (where Mrs. Barnett andMrs Col. Freeman had
been waiting for me several days), I was again knocked up and went to bed where I was kept
confined for 10 or 12 days.We left line creek this day week and the day after I relapsed from
the fatigue, and jolting of the carriage by having a small bed in it I was kept in a tolerable easy
posture. The fever and a dysentery continued on me until the day before I reached here.I am
now however in a fair way of getting able in a few days to attend to by business again...Indeed
there is absolute danger from the Indians to be dreaded there as much as in almost any part of
the Territory or at least so thinks the Governor and from recent murders committed by them in
that quarter we have not much need to doubt it.My brother and another gentleman who left
Huntsville wwith me and who parted with me in Jone's Valley about 50 miles above the falls of
the Black Warrior wre diverted from their journey the same day we parted y meeting a number of
persons fleeing from the Indians on the road they were traveling..."
Most of Alexander's letters originated from Milledgeville, Ga., where one of the Land Offices was located, and occasionally from Augusta, Ga., and other correspondence originated form Land Offices in northern Alabama.Land records show that between 1/3/1822 and 11/16/1830 he purchased 3058.57 acres of land in or around Huntsville. However, according to one of his letters to Meigs, he began purchasing land at public sales as early as 1817.The Alabama census of 1820 shows Alexander living in Dallas County with his household as follows: 1 WM over 21, 3 WM under 21, 1 WF over 21, 2 WF under 21.(Al. Census Returns 1820)Alexander's will was recorded in Mobile Co., Al., Wills 2, 1837-1857, page 133.
