BIRTH-PLACE: The birthplace of the Frank was probably in or near Byt o m Poland. Frank's Declaration of Intention describes his birth and l a st foreign residence as Freikorten (Frei Korten ?), Germany. But tow n s with these names have not been located in Silesia (Schlesien in Ge r man). The Hamburg Passenger List has his residence as Reuthen, Schle s ien. A town by the name of Reuthen has not been located in Silesia . F rank's Death Certificate states that Frank's father John was bor n i n Bytom Poland. The Polish town of Bytom in Silesia is called Beut he n in German. Bytom is also near several mines including silver, lea d , copper, and coal. With the family legend of Frank being a miner a n d the similarity between the German name of Beuthen (for Bytom) an d R euthen, the evidence seems to indicate that the birthplace of Fran k w as in or around Bytom Poland.
BIOGRAPHY: At the 1994 Pawlik reunion, Joy Hahn of Cuero TX and Els i e Deloris Allen of Tyler TX told the story that Frank Pawlik was a m i ner (Coal?) before coming to Texas. Elsie also stated that the fami l y lived near the border. First the family was required to give up th e ir guns to German solders. Later they were forced to speak only Germ a n instead of Polish. Upon this restriction, Mary stated it was tim e f or the family to leave. The Hamburg Passenger Lists state that Fra nk , Maria, Teofel, and Gertrude left Hamburg Germany for New York o n 2 5 Sep 1890 on the vessel "Columbia". The family arrived in the por t o f Galveston on or about 15 Nov 1890. According to Sylvia Hadamek a n d the HISTORY OF THE PEOPLE OF LIVE OAK COUNTY TEXAS, Frank and hi s f amily settled first in Panna Maria, TX and latter in Cuero, TX. Cu er o was largely German at the time. Frank rarely went to town, letti n g his wife Mary do the shopping since she could speak both English a n d German. In 1919, Frank moved with his five yonger children to Blo c k A, near George West, Live Oak Co., TX in 1919 to farm 337 acres. F r ank's Declaration of Intention (Naturalization) Record describes h i m as having fair complexion, height of 5 feet 6 inches, weight 120 p o unds, grey hair (he was 66 years old at the time), and blue eyes.
