Descendants of Peter Ransone
35.JOHN6 RANSOM, JR. (JOHN5, GEORGE4RANSONE, JAMES3RANSOM, PETER2RANSONE, UNKNOWN FATHER OF PETER1) was born Abt. 1755 in probably Virginia, and died Bet. 1820 - May 10 1827 in probably Hancock or Greene County, Georgia. He married MARTHA (SPECULATION) EVANS in probably North Carolina. She was born Bef. 1775, and died Aft. 1808.
Notes for JOHN RANSOM, JR.:
1771; Granville County N.C.; listed as a soldier (along with Reuben) in a company commanded by Captain Jonathan Kittrell.
So, if you assume you had to be at least 16 years old to be in the militia, you'd guess he was b. before abt. 1755.
1790/1793: see will of father (John)
1790 census of Franklin Co. NC has a John Ransom (which one I don't know i.e. Sr. or Jr.): 1male > 16, 2 males <16, 3 females, 6 slaves.
So, if this is John Junior, then he'd have 2 males b. between 1774 and 1790. Could be that the James m. Nancy Randolph is one. He'd be 8 years old then and in 1800 would be 18 and possibly living elsewhere (perhaps away to school-he did well financially later - worth $10000 in 1850). That could explain the lack of children in 1800 with John Jr. Even the Elizabeth that m. Elijah Ball in 1795 could be his daughter. Again, that would partially explain no females in 1800. So, the idea is that perhaps he had children but they were grown enough to be away from home and perhaps his wife died before the 1800 census. Then, by 1820 maybe he had another wife? and kids?
1800: (probably this John); census of Franklin Co. N.C. has 1 male 26 to 45 years old, none others listed. AND, no slaves - just like the 1790 census of a John which I don't know if is Sr. or Jr.
So, this would say he was born between 1755 and 1774 and apparently had no family. If the 1790 John is him, then what happened to his family? Something bad, perhaps? See above - the militia activity would say b. before or abt. 1755.
1820: (could be this John?? Must be!); census Greene Co. Ga. has males: 210-16, 1 16-18, 1 18-26, 1 45-over; females: 1 under 10, 1 10-16, 1 45-over; 1 person engaged in agriculture.
So, this says 4 sons possible, two b. 1804-1810, 1 b. 1802-1804, 1 b. 1794-1802 but since he had no children in 1800??, this age would be 1800-1802??); two daughters, one b. 1810-1820 and another b. 1804-1810.
As per my current guessing:
2 males 10-16 would be James and Reuben
1 male 16-18 would be Thomas (or unknown)
1 male 18-26 is unknown (or Thomas)
1 female 0-10 is Sarah
1 female 10-16 is unknown - might be the Elizabeth b. abt. 1808 & m. William (Mc)Giboney 12/14/1824 in Hancock Co. Ga. Note that Hancock Co. would indicate the other Ransom family, though! Note that a Henry Co. Ga. query dated 9/30/99 by Melinda McGiboney states that Elizabeth Ransom McGiboney gave birth to several children in Henry Co. Note that that's where James (Nancy Randolph) resided in 1840 and apparently John (son of James and Nancy) resided in 1830? and 1840? On 9/23/00 concluded she is Elizabeth.
It's a good guess that the Reuben Ransom in 1830 Greene Co. Ga. who married Elizabeth Bunan, is his son. I'm going to go ahead and attach Reuben here and hope to prove it some day. In 6/1999 concluded that all the Greene Co Ransoms are related.
A daughter of a William Evans, who died in Putnam Co. Ga. in 1808, was stated as being a Mrs. John Ransom in William Evan's will. Is this our John Ransom? It almost has to be! There are no other known John Ransoms old enough at that time to be married. Further guessing would give her first name as Martha.
Note also that in Putnam Co. Ga. Will Bk. A Pgs. 69-71 is will of George Brewer, dated 3/26/1810 - dau. Polly Thomas (her 2 children Henry and Thomas Ransom dau. Polly's oldest son Harvey(or Henry?) - next oldest son Thomas Ransom - probated 3/13/1815. This note is unclear! Could they have been Henry and Ransom Thomas?
Note that Samuel Ransom is indexed in the 1820 census of Putnam! He was married to a Polly Andrews!
Based upon my guessing (see notes under John's possible wife), I guess John died between the 1820 census and the 5/10/1827 lottery draw of the widow, Martha Ransom. Certainly he's gone by 1830.
1827 Georgia Land Lottery: Martha Ransom, Widow drew in Hancock Co., on the 56th day's drawing, 5/10/1827, Capt.'s District: 112th; No. 29, Dist.: 1; County: Troup Co. NOTE that Troup Co. is where the sons I specualte are John's end up i.e. Thomas S. and Reuben in Harris (which came out of Troup; but, the kids of James & Ibby end up in Troup also).
Notes for MARTHA (SPECULATION) EVANS:
My guess is that John's wife was an Evans girl and her first name was Martha. This is based on a daughter of a William Evans, who died in Putnam Co. Ga. in 1808, who was stated as being a Mrs. John Ransom in William Evan's will. Then, a widow, Martha Ransom, drew land in the 1827 land lottery on 5/10/1827, 56th days drawing, in Hancock Co., 112th Capt.'s Dist., No. 29, District 1, Troup Co.
Note this would jibe with my theory that the James in 1850 Troup Co. is John Jr.'s son. Then, note that that James (in Troup who married Julia Holloway) named a daughter Martha (perhaps after his mother?).
Ann Thomas Farnsworth, of Fairfield Texas, provided an outline of the Evans family which is confusing: it gives the William Evans (whose will is 1808 in Putnam Co. Ga) birth as abt 1762 and death 1808. The daughter, Mrs. John Ransom, is given as b. abt. 1797. That would make her only abt. 11 years old or younger when married to John! Further, if my guessing at the children of John Ransom Jr. is correct, then she'd be abt. 5 years old when Thomas S. Ransom was born (in 1802)! Ann provided ten children of Wm. Evans - the earliest being b. abt. 1780 in Va.
Thought: She probably was living with one of her children in 1830, if she's alive, so she wouldn't show as a head-of-household. I have incomplete census data but presumably, she'd be in Hancock and she should be fairly obvious i.e. a much older female in the household of her son?
The John Ransom alluded to, in Wm. Evans' will almost HAS TO BEJohn Ransom Jr. There are no others old enough to be married, in that part of the world, that I know of.
Children of JOHN RANSOM and MARTHA EVANS are:
i. | POSSIBLE MALE CHILD OF JOHN7 RANSOM, b. Bet. 1794 - 1802; d. Unknown.
82. | ii. | THOMAS S. (UNPROVEN) RANSOM, b. Abt. 1802, North Carolina; d. 1866, Harris County, Georgia.
83. | iii. | REUBEN (UNPROVEN) RANSOM, b. Bet. July 04 - August 27, 1804, North Carolina; d. Unknown.
84. | iv. | JAMES (UNPROVEN) RANSOM, b. Bet. 1807 - 1808, Georgia; d. Unknown.
v. | UNKNOWN FEMALE CHILD1 OF JOHN RANSOM, b. Bet. 1804 - 1810; d. Unknown. |
Notes for UNKNOWN FEMALE CHILD1 OF JOHN RANSOM: 9/23/00 later: reconsidered and put everything back the way it was: 9/23/00: the following set of notes was under the Unknown Daughter I had for John Jr. before I transferred Elizabeth to that spot. So, I'm just copying the notes I had to here, so I don't lose any of my prior thoughts on the issue (albeit incorrect at the time) Note that a Sarah Ransom married Nathan Marchman 12/10/1835 Greene Co. Ga. This is possibly important because: (1) The Marchman family was related to the Knowles family and (2) I've concluded that all Greene Co. Ransoms are Reuben R.'s kinfolk. You know, I know nothing about Nathan Marchman's age, so I suppose it's plausible that this Sarah Ransom could be a Mrs. and hence possibly the widow of John Jr.? There's another Sarah Ransom who married in Greene Co. Ga. 10/13/1833 to James Bruce. Note I already went ahead and included this Sarah (the one married to Bruce) as a child of John Ransom, Jr. Could this child be the Rebeccah that married Britton Knowles? Info recv'd in April 2000 from Becky Lee hints at a close relationship between the Reuben Ransom (who married Elizabeth Bunan) and Mary Jane Knowles, the dau. of Britton. However, reuben Sr. did name some Knowles grandchildren? 9/23/00: I merely had Unknown Female Child1 Of John Ransom b. 1804-1810 here based upon the 1820 census info. Today, after sorting out who Robert S. Ransom's daughters were, it left Elizabeth that married McGiboney as almost certainly fitting this person. So, attached her here. |
85. | vi. | SARAH (UNPROVEN) RANSOM, b. 1817, Georgia; d. Unknown. |
36.MARY6 RANSOM (JOHN5, GEORGE4RANSONE, JAMES3RANSOM, PETER2RANSONE, UNKNOWN FATHER OF PETER1) was born Abt. 1762 in North Carolina, and died Unknown. She married SAMUEL HUNT October 10, 1788 in Granville County, North Carolina. He was born Abt. 1760, and died Abt. 1797.
Notes for MARY RANSOM:
2/24/2000: I had not made this connection before. However, on 2/24/2000 began email correspondence with Lee Turner ([email protected]) who provided startling news - Mary Ransom Hunt (who married Samuel Hunt 10/18/1788 Granville Co. NC - I already this part of the story), in 1802 Granville/Franklin?, was appointed guardian to her children, Letha, John and Hannah with bondsmen James McDaniel and Reuben Ransome. She provided the approx. birth/death date on Samuel, the approx. birth date on Mary and the children's names, also.
Discussion: since, of the three separate Ransom families of the Granville area, only John Ransom's descendants are not defined, then logically, any female Ransom marrying there and then that is not a child of the line of James (m. Grizzell) or Richard (m. Frances Hicks), must be John's descendants. Hence, this Mary must be John's child. Reuben acting as a bondsman is strong hint, also. Note that the 1802 guardian date is just prior to Reuben's migration to Georgia in abt. 1805.
My older records (History of Granville Co. N.C. Vol. 1 Marriage Bonds) have the marriage as 10/10/1788, bond #5271, Granville Co. NC: Mary Ransome to Samuel Hunt; bondsman William Harris

Surname: Overton, Hunt, Hicks, Yeargin, Knight, Parrott, Brummitt
I am researching the Overton, Hicks, Hunt, Yeargin, Knight, Parrott, and Brummitt families for my ancestors. My Grandfather was Aaron Chaucley Overton. His parents were Aaron Hicks Overton and Harriett Christopher Yeargin. Harriett's parents were David Yeargin and Caroline F. Knight. Aaron Chaucley Overton married Ruth Elsie Gray Hunt. Her parents were Charles Louis Hunt and Sue Ida Parrott. Charles' parents were John Henry Hunt and Eliza Hicks. Sue Parrott's parents were Mark E. Parrott and Mariah Caroline Brummitt. If you have any information on any of these lines, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks. Ruth Achurch
MY NOTE: looks like Aaron, 17 m in 1850 is mentioned here.
Notice that Mary's birth in NC in abt. 1762 is the earliest "proof" I have on John's being in NC by then.
Following reply to my email requesting source data on the guardianship (recv'd 2/27/2000):
Subject:Mary Hunt Guardianship
Primary source is at the NC Archives in a box containing Granville County Estate records. The bonds are located in that box,in same folder is the estate settlement of Mary's husband Samuel Hunt.
Secondary source is COURT MINUTES OF GRANVILLE COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA 1746-1820 by Zae Hargett Gwynn.page 193 of this book for Feburary session 1802 Mary Hunt, widow of Samuel Hunt, is appointed guardian of Lethea, John, and Hannah, orphans of Samuel Hunt, deceased, with bondsment being James McDaniel and Reuben Ransome.
Notes for SAMUEL HUNT:
Samuel Hunt is in 1790 Granville Co. NC, Oxford District - Taken from Tax Lists, found at the Granville Co. NC archives, USGenWeb 2/26/2000
Children of MARY RANSOM and SAMUEL HUNT are:
86. | i. | LETHA7 HUNT, b. Abt. 1794, North Carolina; d. 1879, probably Granville County, North Carolina.
ii. | JOHN HUNT, b. Bef. 1802; d. Unknown. |
Notes for JOHN HUNT: 2/26/00 at ancestry.com found 3 Granville Co. NC marriages for John Hunt: John Hunt m. Betsy Taylor 9/17/1804 - his mother married 1788, so if him, he'd be 16 max - so, not him John P. Hunt m. Sally Longmire 12/19/1811 John Hunt m. Susan Land 10/23/1820 His sisters Letha and Hannah married in 1818 and 1824, respectively. In the guardianship, the sequence given was Letha, John, then Hannah. Thus, it's likely that he was the middle born child and since Letha was b. abt. 1794, we can conclude he was probably born after 1794. Hence, the 1811 Longmire marriage would make him less than/equal to 17. My guess is, since it's between the two sisters' marriage dates and he was born between them (probably) then the Susan Land marriage is him. Birth: bef. 1802 due to guardianship papers of that date - see under mother. Albeit the father, Elisha Overton died abt 1797 (based on email from Lee Turner re the guardianship), so, can assume the kids couldn't have been born later than about 1798. |
iii. | HANNAH HUNT, b. Bef. 1802; d. Unknown; m. JOSEPH OVERTON, October 02, 1824, Granville County, North Carolina; d. Unknown. |
Notes for HANNAH HUNT: See marriage area note Birth: bef. 1802 due to guardianship papers of that date - see under mother. Albeit the father, Elisha Overton died abt 1797 (based on email from Lee Turner re the guardianship), so, can assume the kids couldn't have been born later than about 1798. |
Marriage Notes for HANNAH HUNT and JOSEPH OVERTON: At ancestry.com 2/26/00 found this marriage - note her sister maried a Elisha Overton: North Carolina Granville County Hunt, Hannah married Overton, Joseph on 02 Oct 1824 in Granville County, North Carolina |
