Notes for EDWARD REAVIS:
Most Reavis researchers generally agree that Edward Reavis was the first generation Reavis in America, having come from the Paddington England area. There are many theories as to how and why he came to America. The most prevalent theory is that, prior to coming to America, either his name was "Revis," or "Alley."Edward is the first individual identified has spelling his name "Reavis" (pronounced like 'crevice').The most likely reason for him coming to America was to escape persecution for hisreligious beliefs. Many individuals of his day, known as "Seperatists," were held prisioner in Newgate Prision in London, England. There are several passenger lists containing Revis and Alley who came to America as indentured servants to escape the religious persecution.Apparently, Edward saw a need to change his name from what it was in England. According, Edward is recognized as the first "Reavis" in America. His eight sons each represent a different branch of the Reavis Family in America today.
