Viva was in Lakin, KS when the dust bowl hit.It put thousands out of work and out of their homes. A lot of them went west on what they had heard or saw in some flyers.Ends up that there were more people coming west then there were jobs. This bought wages down, and the people already living out west resented the "Okies" and did not want them out in CA. (Per Movie Dan Piper saw)

Per Interview of Paul Piper by Dan Piper: Paul talked about some of the good old days. When Viva and Jess moved to Sacramento they purchased a piece of proerty that had a house on it and a one room shack on it.They remodeled the one room shack and added a bathroom, kitchen, and another bedroom.Jess Piper, Paul's dad, and Werter Moore, Viva's brother, did the carpentry work.It had a roomy bathroom and a kitchen with a gas stove.Rebecca, Viva's mother, was used to the way things were in Kansas. She did not like an indoor toilet and made them build an outhouse. She did not like the gas stove and had them put her old wood stove in a shed behind the house they built and she would do her cooking there.
Viva worked in a Gas station in Sacramento, CA during the War.People had to stand in line once a month to get stamps to buy gasoline. If you did not use all your stamps, you did not give them back, because they would short you that much the next month.Viva does not have any of those stamp books that she saved. Each book allowed you to purchase 4 gallons of gas.Viva gave her extra stamps away to GI's on furlow. The military would give the GI's one stamp, or only 4 gallons of gas per month.Viva would give the GI's her extra stamps and somtimes just fill their tanks by mistake (on purpose). This allowed these GI's enough gas to go home, maybe the last time before they went overseas.
Viva's birth certificate.Born Council Grove, Morris Co, KS
Note: It looks like Viva's name was filled in much later, as if the attending physican at birth wrote out the certificate and later, on March 17, 1943, her name was filed in and place of birth. Ask Viva if this is what happened. She would have been almost 30 years old by the time the name was put on the certificate.

The John in the picture is John Moore, my mom's older brother.Look how small Mom was and shehad to move those bails of hay on her own until Dick showed up, or was it Bill, I don't remember.
