A day or so later Lt Raymond Renuart left Iwo Jima for a flight to Japan in his C-46 and on approach to the destination airport, the aircraft was fired on by some renegade Japanese troops who hadn't gotten the word or had not accepted the fact that the war was over.Tragically, the aircraft sustained major damage and crashed with no survivors.Today, Ray is memorialized by a plaque at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Coral Gables, close to the Renuart family tomb there. |
