Harold Rhode's Family Home Page

Our family came to the United States during the late 19th century and early 20th centuries.
During the late 18th and most of the 19th centuries, our Rhode ancestors lived in what is today northern Lithuania and southern Latvia. The family name was pronounced RO-deh, in Europe, and are Israelites.Our ancestors constantly intermarried with the Sochen AKA Shohen family who are Kohanim. (Some of the Sochen family members used the name Cohen or Katz.) Though we do not know exactly how we came to that area, there is a story in our family that we owned land under the Swedish king, but lost it when the Russians captured the area, because the Russians did not allow Jews to own land. The Russians captured that area from the Swedes around 1700, which means our ancestors must have lived there before that time.
As the attached tree indicates, we are related to other families bearing this name and its variants from that area as well.These families either stayed there, or immigrated to South Africa, and other places in the US, and a few to Israel.We hope, with time, to learn how all of these families are interrelated.
NAME MEANING:
1. According to Alexander Beider, the eminent scholar of Jewish names, RO-deh comes from the female name Rhoda.
2. Alternatively, our DNA proves that we lived in Sicily before migrating northward sometime before 1492.Italian Jews often took place names as family names.And there is a place in Eastern Sicily called RODI, which also might be the origin of our family name.
