Notes for Peter Patriarch Craven:
The Peter CRAVEN mentioned above was born ca 1712 possibly in Salem, NJ.Many think he was a son of Ann CROFT who married Robert or Richard CRAVEN in England. The husband died and Ann come to America with her 3 children, Thomas, Ann and Peter, b. ca 1671.This family is documented and Peter could have possibly come down from Jersey through Augusta County, VA.There was a Peter CRAVEN there about the right time to be our PeterŒŒ.there is mention of him working on a road, but, I for one, am not convinced these are all connected.Another source, "The House of CRAVENS" says that Ann CROFT CRAVEN who md. Charles BAGLEYŒŒher son Peter died without issue. But I haven't seen a source for that information either so I don't know if that is correct either.
REFN: 427Moved with his widowed mother and two brothers to America and located in Pennsylvania. Of the three brothers, one remained in Pennsylvania, one went West to Indiana, and Peter Craven, came South to North Carolina, with other Quakers and their families, and settled in Colonial Orange County, present day Randolph County. He cut the original timber and built a house near a spring in sight of Concord Cemetery, near Coleridge, North Carolina. His grave there is unmarked, but the graves of his son, Thomas Craven, and grandson, Solomon Craven, along with many of his descendants are to be found in this cemetery today. Peter Craven was a potter and operated the first potter shop of record in Randolph County. It is believed that Peter Craven was married to an Indian Princess. He was acquainted with the Indians and during the Indian uprisings was traveling nearby and or crossing the Susquehannah River in Pennsylvania during his travels through Pennsylvania.
