DEATH OF COLEMAN A. WARD IN 1907:
It was on a Sunday and we were having a revival down at the Wheeler School House. My daddy (Coleman Ward) was drunk and pretended to be going to church. He knocked Ma (Rebecca Tutor Ward) off the porch and hit her with a gun; her face was a bleeding. The preacher was there and went on to church and told Grandpa (Isaac Tutor) and them about it.As the preacher was leaving he said "children, be good to your mother".At the church the preacher told grandpa and mother's brother, Sam (Tutor) 'bout it.They came down to the house in the wagon.Grandpa and Ma's brother was gonna take us away. The preacher said my daddy would come back and kill us that night. We were getting ready to go with Grandpa when my daddy came up to the gate back out here a-field and hollered out and said "you're all out there in a row".Tom (Ward) went in the house and got Pa's Winchester and a shotgun and gave Ma's brother-in-law (Gus Graves) the Winchester and Sam, her brother, a shotgun.Earlier when my daddy pretended he was going to church that night, he got on a horse and left. But, as he rode up the gate he hollered out - "what are ya'll goin?"He said "I'll kill ever 'blankety-blank' one of ya" and began shooting.Winford (Ward) was a littly bitty fella and I grabbed him and run around behind the house and was trying to crawl under the floor when the shooting was going on.My uncle shot and killed him.I came back around after the shootin was over.I didn't know what had happened - I brought Winford, my brother,- he was about two years old, I guess.Tom was out there on the gate, out on the fence - rail fence, in between where my daddy was and the rest of 'em.Someone said "what happened?" and Tom said "Oh, it ain't nothin but the devil gone".I was 14 and Tom was 'bout grown - about 4 years older than me.Anyway, Tom had sharpened the ax that day and after my daddy went to sleep he was gonna come in with that ax.Tom told them in court that if he (Gus Graves) hadn't killed him (Coleman Ward) he was gonna kill him that night anyway. Frankie said she had always heard it was Ross (Ward), but Mamo said no, it was Tom.Tom said that if my uncle hadn't killed him he intended to chop his head off that night after he went to sleep. That's how awful he was.He beat Tom one time with a black-snake whip and Tom couldn't walk for two or three months.Swanee asked, "Was he drunk when he beat him up?"Mamo replied, "Yea he was drunk - when he was sober he was okay. He'd whup us with that ole butt end of a horse-whup."Swanee - "you'd probably all run when you saw him coming, I imagine".Mamo - "Run, wouldn't do no good to run, we was all scared to death of him. Why, ever one of us kids rejoiced when he was killed - that's how much we thought of him. Then, me and Munk, my younger brother, we'd stay awake at night and go round the house fraid he was gonna kill Ma."Frankie - "Did he beat her up lot of times?"Mamo - "When he was drunk, yea. When he was sober he was real good to her. He'd give her money and tell her to go to town and spend it.When he was sober he was real good to her, but when he was drunk he didn't have no sense."Sonny asked, "He was full blood Indian wasn't he?"Frankie spoke up - "he was Spainard wasn't he?"Mamo - "No, he was Indian, but he wasn't no full-blood".Sonny - "what kind of Indian was he"?Mamo - "Choctaw Indian".

(Conversation with Jewel Ward Hill, September 1996.Provided to me by Selenda Billington on October 28, 1999):
Beckie liked to get out in the field and hoe.She was cantankerous and bossy. She was not affectionate, never had a grandchild sit on her lap. Beckie was a large woman, not fat, just large.Think she never patted a grandkin in her life.Didn't care for children. They said her husband had a lot of money and she left her next husband to get it.She had money. But Jake and Pete got everything she had. When Coleman was shot and killed, both Sam and Gus were shooting.Gus took the blame to keep Sam from worrying himself to death. The shooting bothered Uncle Sam. Heard Coleman was the best man there ever was unless he was drinking. Beckie's other husband was "too good", she wouldn't live with him.
