THE RISHEL FAMILY IN AMERICA
The Rishels originally lived in the Lachen-Speyerdor Gommersheim area, which is now called Pfalz.The Rishels came to this county in the mid-1700s after having lived in Holland for some years, we think.Being of staunch Lutheran German stock, they possibly shared the Huguenot persecution prevalent in France at that time, and so fled to Holland, which was the first country to offer complete religious freedom.After arriving in Philadelphia, Pa. in the mid-1700s and swearing allegiance to the British Crown, they settled in what would become Berks and Bucks Counties, Penna.Some married here and others brought families with them.Unfortunately, the ships records did not show wives or children's names in their passenger logs.
William Penn had been given a large land grant that later became Pennsylvania.The grant required settlers for the area.Penn visited Europe and persuaded many to come here and settle.Those who could not pay their passage became indentured and were required to repay that fee.Whether this was done in money, goods, or services, is not clear at this date.It is believed that some cases took several years to settle the debt.
The following is a list of the five men of whom we have records of arrival, names, dates ect.They were possibly brothers or at least related.The varied spellings of the names is typical of the problems of the time, since the names were spelled phonetically, by those in charge of documenting the immigrants.They simply spelled the names as the names sounded to them.Two different clerks, two different spellings!!
Johann Michael Rishel (Reusghel) born 1712 in Europe.Died in 1760 in PA.Arrived in Philadelphia 5 September, 1738 aboard the Winter Galley from Rotterdam.Information recorded in Archives series 3, Vol. 17 pg. 149.Also noted in German Pioneers, by Strassburger, Vol. 1 pgs 198-9, 01-3.Swore allegiance to the British Crown.
Melchoir Rishel (Reysal) born 1717 in Europe.Arrived in Philadelphia 5 September 1751 aboard the ship Shirley from Rotterdam.Swore allegiance to the British Crown.Documented in "30,000 Names of Immigrants", pg. 249.History has lost Melchoir after he landed.he is simply described as lost.Further information on this individual is unknown.

Heinrich Ulrich Rishel (Rossell) born 1721 in Europe.Died 1827, Penna.Arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship, Friendship from Hamburg, Germany on 19 November 1753.Swore allegiance to the British Crown.Listed in "30,000 Names of Immigrants."Pg. 322.
Johann Adam Rishel (Reistel) born in Europe.Arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship, Hope, from Rotterdam on August 28, 1733.Swore allegiance to the British Crown.Documented in the ship's log.
At the time, ships listed their initial departure port, then stop at ports along the way to pick up passengers, such as trains and buses do today.So a ship from Hamburg, might not necessarily mean that a person came aboard at that port.
Since that time, our ancestors have migrated west and north into almost every corner of this country and Canada.Many have been seen military service in every conflict this nation has had.The Rishels originally settled in Bucks and Berks counties of Pennsylvania, branching out from there.Most were farmers, although there were other crafts such as carpenters, masons, wagon makers, and wheelwrights.Jonas Rishel was a doctor who traveled west and was a noted physician for some of the Plains Indian Tribes of the time.It is noted that family branches continue to be discovered, in due, partly to the efficiency of the internet, and communications between relatives being much simplified.More and more microfilm documentation is being made available by the government such as census records, tax records, and even counties are posting vital statistics for research.The search continues...
John Rishel was supposedly a wagoneer on the National Highway.
