Jana's great great grandparents. John was born 1852 Briton Ferry, Glamorgan, South Wales.He married Emma Maria Rees (born 1847 Camarthen, South Wales) 1873 Bethesda Chapel, Briton Ferry, South Wales. They had five children before Emma Maria's died of Phthisis in 1884. Tom's great grandfather Jacob Clemmons Fey was born 24 Aug 1860 in West Leyden, Lewis, NY to Clemens Fey and Maria Anna Seifen (of Prussia). He headed to Montana to ranch in 1881 with his brother Anthony Henry Fey but returned to NY to marry Mary Jane Noakes 04 Jun 1884. He brought his bride back to Montana where they raised six children born between 1885 and 1894 (Tom's grandmother Mabel Clare Fey was their third born 1889).After Mary Jane died in 1904, Jake married Lena M. - she died in 1908 and Jake married Pearl Kloss in 1910 and they adopted a daughter. Jana's great great great grandmother born 24 Jun 1842 Reinlie, Valdres, Norway to Kristen Sveinson Lien and Anne Mikkelsdtr. Sør-Lie.She married Ole Olson Espelien 23 Mar 1861 North Aurdal, Valdres, Norway and they had 12 children - five of them died as infants three of which took sick while immigrating to America in June 1882 - one was buried at sea and two were buried a few weeks later in Pope Co., Minnesota. One infant born a few months after their arrival to America lived only three months.A tough start in their new country. She died 08 Jan 1909 -her obituary in the Glenwood Herald June 15, 1909Mrs. Ole Espelien passed away quietly at her home last Friday after many years of suffering from asthma. The deceased was 66 years of age at the time of her death and is survived by a husband, two sons and four daughters, viz: Ole and Albert Espelien, Mrs. Adam Olson of Benson, Mrs. Ben Evjen, Mrs. Thom Nelson and Mrs. Nels Benson of Langhei, who mourn the loss of faithful wife and loving mother. The house is moved to the center of Nykarleby. Stig Haglund took the picture to the monthly meeting of the genealogists and Bo Kronqvist, could identify it. The picture is also in the collections of Nykarleby museum, of which Bo is keeper.I had a couple of other pictures of the building,- they were taken from an other direction- the attic has been made lower- the panelling has been changed to an other type- it had been repainted. Ole Espelien (b. 1836 Valdres d. 1916 MN) and Marit Kristensdtr. Nørdre Lie (b. 1842 Valdres, d. 1909 MN) are seated in the center. The Starbuck Times printed this photo of the Ole Espelien Sr. family in their April 4, 1974 edition. - The caption reads: THE OLE ESPELIEN FAMILY of Valdres, Norway, came to America in May 1882. Two sons, Ole Jr., and Knute arrived in 1880. Pictured are (back row) Anne (Mrs. Evjen), Dorte (Mrs. Adam Olson), Ole, Knute, Joren (Mrs. Tom Nelson). Lucille May Andrew was born May 21, 1916 in Briercrest, Saskatchewan to Olga Espelien and Oscar Andrew. The Andrew family moved to Prince George, BC in 1919. She attended school until eighth grade when she started her career working as a waitress.After Oscar died, her Mom married Ernie Carver, a loving grandfather to Olga's grandchildren.Lucy married Howard Johnson 9/26/38. They had one daughter, Beverley Mae.After Howard died in 1970 in Seattle, Lucy became a snowbird to Palm Springs California.She continued waitressing into her late 60's in California. In 1977, she moved to Homeland and Cathedral City, CA to be with Raymond Genereux until his death in 1994.She had been a resident of Long Beach since then until her death at Colonial Care Center April 1, 2005.Her family recalls that she loved to sing and dance, and as a cheerful, vivacious, bubbly redhead who loved a good joke, always had a twinkle in her eye.It seemed her goal was to never intentionally hurt anyone and to make all people feel her warmth and hospitality.In addition to her parents, an infant brother and her husband, she is predeceased by her brother, Orville Andrew in 1967 and her sister, Cora Hill, in 1988.She is survived by her daughter, Bev (Dick) Hawes, brother, Ken (Rose) Andrew, sister-in-law, Marj Andrew, 3 granddaughters, 4 great grandchildren. Stella Otelia Hawes, 98 peacefully passed away at Providence Marianwood in Issaquah December 9, 2004. She was born September 16, 1906 in Grand Marais, Michigan the youngest child of John Seifert Fredrickson and Ida Marie Andersson who were both Swedish speaking Finnish immigrants. The family took the train in 1909 from Michigan to Bremerton so her Father could work for the Navy Yard. Stella's first job was driving a "jitney" bus during the lunch break of the usual driver when she was only 15. After Stella graduated Bremerton Charleston Union High School June 1925 she worked in Detroit for a year while she lived with her sister, Ellen. She returned to Bremerton and met William J. G. Hawes. They eloped on January 26, 1929 to marry in Seattle. Stella worked as a legal secretary until she had children - William J.G. Hawes Jr. and Richard E. Hawes. When her boys were teenagers, she worked for 12 years as a legal secretary. She was involved in Lady Elks for a short time but received her 50-year membership pin from Order of the Eastern Star Reliance Chapter #70. Except for the year she lived in Detroit, Stella lived in Bremerton from 1909 to 1986 when she moved to Bellevue to live with her son, Dick. Madison House in Kirkland was her residence from 1992-2004. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill in 1986, her sister, Ellen in 1976 and her brother Fred in 1985. Tom's Great Grandfather. John Robertson appears to have been an adventurous man.He was born 1838 in London, England.In 1860 he was appointed Assistant Engineer in the Royal Navy.One letter of recommendation written in 1889 indicates he was manager of Foundry in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for two years then Manaharn (location and spelling unsure) for four years and 17 years in Piauhy, Brazil.John was fluent in both English and Portuguese, which is the national language in Brazil - he was employed as an interpreter.According to family lore he was married first to a woman in Brazil, South America and had two children, William and Isabella. In 1883, when he was 45 and living in Lisbon, Portugal, he married 21 year old Arthuretta Faulconer who was born in Sussex, England.Etta first dated John's oldest son, William.An 1887 letter indicates he worked in Almodavar, Portugal from 1883-1887.He worked as an engineer on the Manchester Ship Canal.An 1891 contract of John's is for a three and a half year job in Mexico and he is referred to Captain John Robertson a mechanical engineer. His employer isS. Pearson and Son Contractors of Westminster - he was living in London at the time.According to his wife, Etta's Bible, he died January 1895 (location not recorded but possibly he had returned to London). Tom's Great Great Grandmother. William Robertson and Susannah Bull were married at St. John, Waterloo, Lambeth, on November 21 1837, when he was 31 and she was only 20 years old. Susannah was the daughter of William Bull and Sarah (Willows) of Elsworth, Cambridgeshire.Susannah must have been a boardinghouse keeper since c. 1868 until 1890 when Commercial Directories list her as letting apartments.Mrs. Susannah Robertson is on the Electoral Roll in 1898 at number 42, and her grandaughter Isabella Moore (daughter of son, John Robertson by his first wife in Brazil) at 42, Trinity Square. Tom's maternal grandparents - probably their wedding photo. Hans was born September 27, 1878 in Brunz, Slasvic, Denmark - he immigrated in 1898 to Seattle. Maren Dorthea Nielsen was born March 20, 1889 Næsbjerg Biltofft, Vaarde, Denmark - she immigrated to Seattle October 30, 1907 aboard the Hellig Olav; her passage was paid by her maternal uncle Frands Madsen. Hans and Maren married March 04, 1910 in Seattle - at the time Maren worked as a domestic for a notable minister named Mark Matthews of First Presbyterian Church in Seattle. Hans worked for the Seattle Tacoma Interurban Railway. He later was a poultryman. Hans died in 1953 and Maren in 1985. - Andersen Siblings in Esbjerg, Denmark (141 KB)

Tom's great grandfather born in London lived more than 17 years in Brazil - he had a wife and two children.We assume the Brazilian wife died - his two grown children moved to London. Born 1861 Ticehurst, England to Arthur Faulconer and Harriett Arnold of Sussex. Married John Robertson of London 1883 in Lisbon, Portugal. Tom's grandfather - born 1884 Almodavar, Portugal to British subjects John Robertson & Etta (Faulconer). The Robertsons returned to London in the late 1880's. The family could afford to send the children to boarding school.John died while Charles was between the ages of 8 and 10 - he was away at school and was not informed of his father's death right away. Charles left England in 1904 in part to avoid the Boer War & because he was not getting along with his step-father. According to family lore he sailed to Canada and misjudging distances from a map of N'ern America walked to Montana after taking a train west. He worked in a mercantile in Gold Butte, MT and married his boss' daughter Mabel Fey in 1910.Tom's dad, Walter was born 1917 in Conrad, MT the 2nd son.The family moved further west living in Wallace & Coeur d'Alene, ID in the 20's & finally settled in Mount Vernon, WA in 1930's working in retail, typewriter repair & dry cleaning business. Writer responses that brother may do it by writing a letter, signing it and paying seven marks. "it is depressing if You return from there and have only children born outside of wedlock. We will that you write your letter so we can eclate all three of you at once. The Vicar talked about this in reading examination and said that it is peculiar that everybody do not do this (correctly)" Then text goes to family economy. "Reading examination costed 50 marks and appropriation and neighbour taxes(? registrationfees) costed 90 marks which we have to pay after Easter. Now we have to save some money since we have to buy a new horse. We are getting some money from dairy as six of our cows are milking. We need about 200 marks". Then the letter discusses weather and snow conditions which are unusually dire for this time of the year. " have things been similar in your Grand Marais". "In spite of this we have managed to do our chores properly. It remains to be seen what happens when I and Alexander begin confirmation school and when sowwing has to be done by Father and sister Edla alone. It can become heavy for your old father since there are so many damages in sowing area." Then letter moves to greetings and ending phrases. Tom's Dad - born 1917 Conrad, Montana to Charles Robertson and Mabel (Fey).Moved to Mount Vernon, WA as a young teen & graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1936 and attended Mt. Vernon Junior College. Walt served in the U.S. Navy from 1936 to 1938, then was a pharmacist mate third class in the Naval Reserve from 1943 to 1945.He married Viola Andersen at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Mt. Vernon on Aug. 31, 1941. He was an X-Ray technician for St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Yakima and later the manager of the Xonic X-Ray Co. in Seattle retiring 1982. Tom's mother - born 1920 in Mount Vernon, WA the youngest daughter of Hans Andersen and Mauren (Nielsen). Graduated Mount Vernon High (1936?).Married Walter Robertson 1942 in Mt. Vernon. She gave birth to five children including twins at the age of 41!. Vi enjoyed needlepoint crafts, gardening, reading and editing school newsletters. Edith (left) was Jana's great grandmother.She was born 1874 in Giant's Grave, Neath, Wales.She immigrated to Ishpeming, Michigan in 1895 and married Fenwick Hawes shortly thereafter.Mining took the family to Idaho and when she insisted he change careers, Fenwick took a job at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington shortly after 1910.They had 6 children. Edith died in Seattle in 1960. Her sister, Lottie was born 1880 and left Wales for Michigan in 1900 and shortly thereafter married John Hendra. She had ten children born between 1856-1876 - her fourth Mary Jane Noakes (later Fey) was Tom's great grandmother.
