Notes for ROBERTS:
There is an old Roberts Registry query that states "Letty Jane ROBERTS b c1810/11 Estill, KY d 1838/9, moved to Ind c1815/17 m 1830 Clinton Co MO John THATCHER to Clinton MO c1834, Had brothers Jonathon, Littleton S., George (from Delaney WILLETT, 1930 Lucky St, Bakersfield, CA93307."
Delaney Willett was a descendant of Letty Jane Roberts.I have never been able to find out why he lists these four as siblings.I can only speculate that this was from family knowledge.Mr. Willett has passed on so we can only hope that someone from his branch of the family may be able to answer this question.
Nothing at this time is known (by myself) about Jonathon Roberts.
George and Littleton Roberts were from the same area of Kentucky and they both migrated, at different times, to the same county in Missouri. They named many of their children the same names, and I have an old geneology note from one of the descendants of Susan Roberts that simply lists Susan's brother William as having married his cousin. We know now that this "cousin" was Louisa M. Roberts, daughter of Littleton S. Roberts.
Family lore, passed down through the generations, has said that the original Roberts of our family is a George Roberts who came to the United States from Wales.
One version states that this George Roberts was a prince from Wales who came to Kentucky and established a colony for the Welsh there. This version was from my father.I am sure that to a small boy, listening to stories from his father during the depression years, that George and Polly's large family of 14 children must have seemed like a colony indeed!
The second version from a descendant of Susan Roberts, oldest daughter of George and Polly, states that there were three Roberts brothers who came from Wales. They first went to New York, then down into the Carolina's.According to this story, George Roberts then went to Virginia, where he married Polly Gum, then to Kentucky, and finally to Missouri.
We know now that the George who married Polly Gum was born in Kentucky and married Polly in Estill County, KY.They then migrated to DeKalb County, Missouri about 1856 or 1857.So, the original Roberts who was the father of Littleton and George still remains a mystery.
Perhaps somewhere in the second version of the Roberts story there is some truth, at least, to our Roberts family migration pattern. The fact that both versions, from two different lines of descent, state that our Roberts came from Wales and that the original Roberts who did so was named George is very noteworthy!
Regardless of their origins, George, Lethy, and Littleton Roberts were pioneers who successfully raised large families in fascinating and trying times.
