Jim had been ill for years with a muscular degenerative disease, similar to Lou Gehrigs disease.He had been living in Oregon with his second wife, Joan, and they had come to Arizona to visit his daughter, Janiece, and his grandchildren .He was driving to Arizona in his beloved motorhome, when he was taken gravel y ill.He died shortly after arriving in Arizona.He was cremated and his ash es were spread over Sedona from a Hot Air Balloon...one of the few things he sa id he'd never done but would love to do.Jim was known for his wonderful smile , devilish sense of humor, and love of life.He walked toward everyone he met with his hand outstretched and a brilliant smile.From the time he was diagnos ed with his disease, at age 38 (when he was given 5 years to live) until his de ath at almost 74, he lived his life with exuberance and was a joy to everyone w ho knew him.Jim retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief."Cowards die a thousa nd deaths, the valiant but once."
