G-grandmother Clara M. Haines Dudley told us when we were children that mary Carlile, an educated Indian, married into the Haines family and was a distant grandparent.See Haines, John W.,RICHARD HAINES AND HIS DESCENDANTS, vol. 1, Carr Publishing Co. Inc., Boyce, VA, 1961, pp. 32-36.
Carlile is sometimes spelled Carleill, op. cit., p. 32.
DEATH DATE A QUESTION :12 APR 1746 IS A POSSIBLITY
It is said that Mary Carlile, an educated Indian married into the Haines family. Source: Richard Haines and his Decedents, vol 1, Carr publishing Co. Inc. Boyce Va. 1961pp 32-36. Tradition states that she was a member of the Lenni Lenape Indian Tribe, who was educated and civilized, and a very capable woman. This fact is doubtful, as Mary parents were both born in Middlesex, England, and in the records of the Middlesex and London MM they are listed with children Mary, b. 20 day, 5 month, 1674, Abraham b. 9d 9m, 1675 and John b. 13d 4m, 1678. The Carlile family emmigrated to Burlington Co. NJ. John was married toMary Glading in 1704, withAbraham Carlile, Richard Haines and Richards wife Mary as witnesses. It seems likely that Mary was the sister of John and Abraham that was born in England, and listed with them in the Middlesex MM quarterly meeting records.
Mary Carlile Haines was buried in the Haines Burial ground, Fostertown, NJ
