We are searching for family members who are descendants of ANN WYATT, from Nevis W.I. The record book at Fig Tree Church record the baptism of ANN WYATT on January 5, 1836 and further indicated that at the time of the baptism, she was an adult. Ann had a least 2 children; ALEXANDER HUGGINS, baptized in the Fig Tree Church on January 5, 1838 was probably born in 1837 and SOPHIE "Mama Foo Foo" HUGGINS was apparently born between 1839 and 1843. HUGGINS was the name of early Nevisian plantation and slave owners; and the fact that ANN WYATT'S occupation at the time of Alexander's baptism was that of an apprentice, indicated that she was a former slave. Slavery was apparently abolished in Nevis in 1834. ALEXANDER HUGGINS married JANE ANN WOOLWARD on March 10, 1864. His occupation was listed as "laborer" and his home was in BROWN HILL VILLAGE. Alexander and Jane had 12 children. Four children migrated to the United States - Edward and John Huggins, Dorcas Huggins Stanley (who returned to Nevis after a brief stay in the States), and Rachel Huggins Baker. John (d. 1938) settled in Boston, Mass. while Edward (d. 1948) and Rachel (d. 1973) settled in New Haven, CT. SOPHIE HUGGINS married JAMES PINNEY and had at least 8 children. SARAH PINNEY POWELL was the only child of James and Sophie to come to the United States. She died in 1967. We have heard over the years that Alexander and Sophie may have had at least one other brother who also came to the United States. There are obviously other 'family members' that we have not yet included on our tree. We welcome any information you can share or input on our Clan. * * * *HUGGINS CLAN NEWSAugust, 2001* * * * Return to Nevis!
