In 1841, at age of 23 James accompanied his brother on a 12 month voyage round world. It was the that he first visited Cape.
Therafter James farmed in Sussex and Kent and in 1863 emigrated toS Africa settling in East London.
in 1867 James played role in development of a school in Panmure and in 1882 elected one of three members of first Cambridge Village Management Board.
