In 1855, Andrew Holden, my great-great-grandfather, travelled to New York to meet 2 of his brothers who were immigrating. When he arrived the nuns who assisted new arrivals told him about a young girl named Mary Julia Greene who was on the same ship as his brothers. Mary was travelling with her grandmother and her grandmother died during the voyage. No one ever came to meet Mary, so the nuns asked Andrew to take her with him. They kept his name and address so that if someone ever came looking for Mary, they would know where to send them. As far as we know, no one ever did. Mary Julia Greene was listed in census records as Mary J. Holden; in the family she was called "Aunt Mame." - Glenda Josephine and Florence Margaret Schoen (6 KB)
