NOTES
N O T E#A:N O T E#A:Benjamin GILSTRAP is the Great Great Great Great(4G) Grandfather of Frederick Morton III and Joe Ellis SCOTT
N O T E# 1:From Source # 2, I got daughter Malinda's, and John W
JOHNSON's, marriage date and place (Adair Co).In addition, three other
GILSTRAP marriages were included, which MIGHT be Isaac's sons:
GILSTRAP, BrightmarriedBRADLEY, Nancy9- 8-(18)39Randolph Co MO
GILSTRAP, PetermarriedMULLINIX, Anny4-19-(18)35Randolph Co MO
GILSTRAP, PetermarriedCLOE, Mary Jane3-11-(18)47JasperCo MO
GILSTRAT(sic), Joseph marriedCLOE, MargaretJasperCo MO
Randolph County is separated from Adair Co, where Malinda and John W JOHNSON
were married in 1845, by Macon County MO.Jasper Co MO is located in SW MO, at
the opposite corner of MO from Adair/Macon/Randolph counties in NE MO.
Interestingly enough, Jasper is not too far from Benton and Washington Co AR,
where the GILSTRAPs and JOHNSONs moved in 1849/50.
Also note that a Peter GILSTRAP married Anny MULLINIX 19 Apr 1835 in Randolph
Co; Peter GILSTRAP also married Mary Jane CLOE 12 years latter on 11 Mar 1847,
but in Jasper Co.Are these the same Peter GILSTRAP or different Peters
GILSTRAP?If the same, he must have moved from Randolph to Jasper Cos in the
intervening period. Was this move related to the 1849/50 move of the GILSTRAPs
and JOHNSONs from NE MO to NW AR, a move in the same basic direction?
I assume the "GILSTRAT, Joseph" listing is "GILSTRAP, Joseph."Were Peter
and Joseph brothers who married the CLOE sisters?(I need to pick up the
Joseph/Margaret marriage date when possible; the date is obviously before 1840
--- see title of source.]
What was the relationship of Bright, Peter and Joseph GILSTRAP to Isaac and
Lockey? The ages would be appropriate for them to be sons of Isaac and Lockey,
and therefore brothers of Malinda.I need to research Bright/Peter/Jospeh in
the 1850 and plus censuses for them, and the 1820 TN and 1830 MO census for
Isaac GILSTRAP.
NOTE # 2:SOURCE # 4 (on p 86) the following GILSTRAPs:
GILSTRAP, IsaacmarriedKING, Elizabeth18 Jun 1839Macon CoMO
GILSTRAP, BrightmarriedBRADLEY, Nancy8 Sep 1839Randolph CoMO
GILSTRAP, PetermarriedMULLINIX, Anny19 Apr 1835Randolph CoMO
Note that Bright and Peter of Randolph Co are also listed in NOTE # 1 above.
I am assigning Isaac as an eldest child of Isaac and Lockey GILSTRAP,
obviously because of the name, but also because Macon Co MO is located
immediately south of Adair Co MO, where John W JOHNSON and Malinda GILSTRAP
were married 8 Feb 1845.[I have now REJECTED Isaac [Jr] as a son of Isaac
and Lockey; there was only one son before 1830 and that was Jesse M {25 Aug
1991}.]
N O T E# 3:From SOURCE # 3, List of Letters, for Fayetteville NC Post
Office:"Sarah TAYLOR & Mary GILSTRAP, Cambellton."Isaac was born in NC.
Could this be part of Isaac's family, perhaps even his mother, or a paternal
aunt?Note that Isaac and Lockey's first daughter was named "Mary."In
addition, their second daughter, Malinda, who married John W JOHNSON, named her
first daughter "Mary A."Furthermore, Malinda and John's son, Isaac (!!)
Nelson, named his third daughter Mary.Of course, "Mary" is a very common
name, but still ...Is that perhaps a clue to where he was born?I find no
"Cambellton" in the FIPS (1977).Nor a "Gambellton."There is a "Campbell
Creek" in Beaufort CO NC.Fayetteville is in Cumberland Co NC.Cumberland Co
is in central NC; Beaufort Co is in the coastal area. Therefore, it is
unlikely that "Cambell Creek" is an echo of "Cambellton."
>>> WE NOW KNOW FROM SOURCE # 3 THAT ISAAC'S MOTHER WAS NAMED MARY [25 Aug
1991]N O T E# 4:I misread several names in the 1850 Census for Isaac and
Lockey.I originally interpreted her name as "Pockey" as I did for Mary's
first child.I also interpreted Mary's married name as "POLLANN," not
"POLLARD."I also read "Benjamin" as "Penyarmia," a spelling I realized
probably was not correct. With information I received in Aug 1991, I revised
these names.
N O T E# 5:The MO 1840 U.S. Census lists the following GILSTRAP heads of
household:
GILSTRAP, A.L.MACO 028 Liberty
LewisMACO 032 Liberty
BrightMACO 034 Liberty
IsaacMACO 034 Liberty
IsaacMACO 052 Cochran
PeterMACO 020 Chariton
Note that Isaac # 1 and Bright are both on same page and Lewis is two pages
earlier, all in Macon Co Liberty Twp.Lewis could be the youngest son of
Peter; he did not die until 21 May 1854; we do not know where.Bright could
not be the son of Peter, since he died in 1835/36 in Randolph Co MO.Bright
here might be Bright, Jr.Peter is not the Patriarch, who died 10 Nov 1795 in
Craven Co NC.I suspect that A.L., Lewis, Bright and Peter were either sons of
Benjamin, as of course is Isaac, or else they are cousins.I need to work all
this out.I suspect Isaac # 1 is Malinda's father and A.L., Lewis and Bright
are his siblings.Isaac and Peter may be sons of Lewis Mumford GILSTRAP --- as
I said I need to do more work.
>>> There were no GILSTRAPs in the 1830 Missouri census.--- 15 Mar 1992 - I now know that Isaac's siblings were Jesse Mumford, Nancy,
and Winiford. Therefore, A.L, Lewis and Bright were not siblings, but probably
cousins. As I pointed out above, Bright cannot be Isaac's uncle, who died in
1835/36 in Randolph Co MO.This Bright could be Bright's son, Isaac's cousin
--- or another cousin. I have no idea who A.L. is.Lewis COULD be Bemjamin's
brother, Lewis [Isaac's uncle], who died 21 May 1854 place unknown.Or Lewis
could be another cousin.I have not yet checked actual census records, except
for Isaac.
N O T E# 6:SOURCE # 6 lists the following GILSTRAP female marriages:
GILSTRAP, DelilahBLANK, Joseph??/29/0000Adair
GILSTRAP, JaneSUMMERS, Ninevah 11/07/1832Randolph
GILSTRAP, MalindaJOHNSON, John W02/06/1845Adair
I suspect Jane is a daughter of Bright, who died in 1835/36 in Randolph Co.
We know, of course, Malinda is Isaac's daughter; Delilah is not --- unless she
is one we don't know about.I have not checked the actual censuses, except for
Isaac's family.
CHRONOLOGY
1799 - Isaac GILSTRAP born in Rowan Co NC--- SOURCES # 1, # 5
[In the 1880 Census, daughter Malinda said her father was born in KY.KY
could be correct, but if NC is correct, this entry by Malinda could indicate
that she remember his stories about growing up in KY.Or NC could just be an
error.] ---From SOURCE # 5, I now know Isaac was born in Rowen Co NC.

checked only the 1840 index, not the record.Bright and Isaac are listed on
the same page; A L GILSTRAP is also in Liberty TWP on p 028.Presumably these
are the Isaac and Bright who are sons of Peter GILSTRAP of NC.

Note that in Dec 1849, Mary's family, at least, still lived in MO [the Census
data SHOULD be as of 1 Jun 1850 - the census taker may not alway have been that
precise, however].So the move would have occured between Dec 1849, when
Cordella POLLANN was born in MO, and 14 Nov 1850, when the census was taken.
1861 - "Isaac, a slave owner in Missouri, sympathized with the
Confederacy. When war broke out, his oldest son, Jesse, 38, a millwright
living in The Narrows, now Mountainburg [Macon Co], 'took with him 17 recruits
to the Federal army at Cassville [Barry Co] Mo.When Colonel LaRue HARRISON
obtained leave to organize an Arkansas regiment, Jesse GILSTRAP raised the
first field company."He was made a captain, Thomas John, a first lieutenant.
Other recruits were their brothers, Benjamin and Wesley, and their
brother-in-law, Reuben BURROWS.'
"Thomas John died of pneumonia at Cross Hollows (Benton county) in November,
1862.Reuben was killed in the Battle of Prairie Grove [Washington Co] in
December [7, 1862], Benjamin died of pneumonia in January.Jesse was assigned
to what we would now call guerilla warfare and, a year later, mustered out of
service on charges of lax discipline, sleeping out of quarters without leave,
failing to make proper company reports, and uncleanliness of person.I found
his eloquent defense in a letter to General ROSENCRANZ in his file at Archives.
"He was given an honorable discharge and elected to the legislature. He too
died a young many in 1866.'
"Thomas John is the only one of the brothers who is buried in the National
Cemetery at Fayetteville."--- SOURCE # 5
