Name also spelled Fleury, and Flory . "He came to America from the Palatinate, Germany and landed at Philadelphia Aug 28 1733. He was 51years of age whe he arrived in the colonies. The vessel on which he and his family arrived was named "Hope".His wife's name was Mary Conrad.Soon after his arrival he settled in Rapho Township, Lancaster County ,Pennsylvania where he lived the remainder of his life and reared his family.This and almost all of the information on this familycomes from "A Genealogy and History of Descendants of Jacob Flora ofFranklin County, Virginia" compiled by Joel Cephas Flora, 1951
This Huguenot family is presumed to have fled from Fleury, France to the Palatinate Germany.Joseph (d. 1741) and Mary Fleure accompaniedby six children arrived in Philadelphia on Aug 28, 1733 on the Hope .During the massacre of St. Bartholomew (August 24, 1572), some Fleurys immigrated to North Italy, and others to Switzerland. At this time it is believed that Joseph J. Flory's ancestors fled to the Palatinate area of Germany where the family remained for the next 150 years.
They settled in Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Their sons became members of the Conestoga congregation: Joseph Jr in 1741, John in 1747, Jacob in 1748, and Abraham in 1756.In 1759 Joseph moved to Paxtang Twp (later part of Dauphin Co) while John stayed on the orignal farm. These two brothers are the progenitors of the PA &MD Florys. Jacob, with his sister Katherine and her husband JacobNeff, moved to Franklin Co VA, settling on the Magodee Creek in 1782. His descendants spell their name Flora.Abraham lived in Brothers Valley, Somerset County, Pennsylvania from 1796 to 1809, whenhe moved to Montgomery County, Ohio following his three sons: Joseph(m. Elizabeth Beegley), Emanuel (m Sarah Kagy) and Henry (m. Anna Kagy).Another son, John (m. Catharine Garber) a minister lived inRockingham County, Virginia and a daughter Susannah (m. John Beeghly)remained in Somerset County, Pennsylvania in the Glades congregation.Abraham and Emanuel were the first ministers in the northern parts of Montgomery County.Many of the members of Emanuel's family stayed with the Old German Baptist Brethren after 1881. The Ohio and midwestern families generally spell their name Flory. Among the descendants ofJoseph Flory Sr. are over two hundred ministers, ten missionaries, five or six college presidents.
