INTRODUCTION
Several years have now passed since my brother Donnie and I started our search for family ancestors and descendants. Though it has, at times, been both difficult and time consuming; it has been also rewarding and helpful to many others who are also researching some of our connected families.
This all began from a conversation that Donnie and I had about our ancestors. It didn’t take long for us to see that we knew very little and had trusted heavily in rumors and hear say. We, as so many, had thought we had ancestry in some Native American tribe. Sadly, I have to say; I have seen no evidence that supports that rumor that had been in family circles for years. There is no doubt that we are descendants of the European countries.
I, along with a brother and sister of the same age, (yes I’m a triplet) was raised in a small southern Alabama town to parents that were well along in their years. For that reason, we never knew but one of my grandparents, that being Amanda Lavada Harvill-Dean, on my mother’s side. My grandmother Mary Nichols-Shackelford died the year after I was born. The remainder died many years before my birth in 1952. So who were these people and where did they come from? The journey began.
When Donnie and I started researching, we both worked on the Shackleford/ Shackelford ancestry. Due to our distance apart, he living in South Florida and me in North Georgia, we quickly realized that a lot of our research was in duplication. We split it up. He has been working on the Shackleford/Shackelford lines and I have been working on the Nichols line. This has quickly expanding to include many more family lines and will continue to do so.
The choice that I made was based in part to research that had been compiled by Thomas Heflin Compton in the 1970s. Having no knowledge of genealogy left me in the cold when it came to getting started. His research became my launching pad. Thomas used the research of Joe Russell Nichols of Timpson, Texas, gathered in the 1930s. Thomas expanded the research of Joe and I, in a similar way, have taken up the torch. Donnie, on the other hand, used as reference the “Shackelford Clan Magazine”, a research of T. K. Jones in the 1940s and 50s. The researches of Thomas and T. K. have been instrumental in the research of the Shackelford/Shackleford and Nichols lines.
Added in September 2001 were the Descendants of John Wellmaker, Sr. I am related to the Wellmaker Family through the marriage of my great great grandparents, Joel Lafayette Nichols and Susan Elizabeth Wellmaker. Many people shared information on this line, too many to name. I would like to thank them all. A special thanks goes to Gary Wellmaker and Saundra Busto. Much of this information was found in the “Wellmaker Family” by T. H. Compton.
The Descendants of William Barrington has been our latest effort. This too would have been impossible without the contributions made by some very generous people. I would especially like to express my gratitude to Carl Coe, Linda Czarny, and Steve Etheridge. Steve is my first cousin who has been heavily involved with genealogy for many years.

I would like to dedicate my research to the memory of my son, CHRISTOPHER LANE SHACKLEFORD, who was killed July 29, 2000, in Marietta, Georgia, by a drunk driver.     Cameron's Chapel Methodist Church is located in what was known as the "Rocky Hill Community" of Crenshaw County, Alabama. From Brantley, go West on Highway 29. Take a right on State 106 an estimated four miles from the center of Brantley (intersection of 331 and 29). On 106 go for another estimated four miles and turn right onto dirt road. The dirt road will fork. The Church and Cemetery are located at that fork. It is believed that Joel Nichols was a co-founder of the Cameron’s Methodist Church. His son George is buried there. Joel left this Church and became a member of the Mt. Ida Methodist Church several miles away. He is buried at the Mt. Ida Cemetery.

I am connected to this family through my great grandparents, Samuel Dean and Ola Barrington. Also, through their grand children Bertie Dean and Durwood Dean.Bertie Dean married Dixon Etheridge. They are my Aunt and Uncle. Dixon is the son of Effie Sport, daughter of Thomas Benjamin Sport and Adaline Augusta Weatherford.Durwood Dean, sister to Bertie Dean, married Oleta Sport, daughter of Marvin Thomas Sport, brother of Effie Sport. Effie and Marvin’s sister Annie married J. B. Tompkins. He is the son of Bradford Tompkins and Myra Taylor. Myra is the daughter of Marvin Taylor and Lula Nichols. Lula is the daughter of Joel Lafayette Nichols and Susan Elizabeth Wellmaker. They are my gg grandparents.

    Crenshaw County, formed from Butler, Coffee, Covington, Pike, and Lowndes Counties, became a County in 1866. Most of the cemeteries listed here are in Crenshaw County. However, a few are in some of the surrounding counties. It is my goal to have every cemetery in Crenshaw County listed before I decide to finish this project. I will need all the help that I can get.
