+David paid taxes on 3 horse in Hamilton County Ohio in 1830 (10) 1834 (12).David bought his first land in Putnam co IN 18 Oct 1837, 80 acres in Section 13 Twp 13 Range 3 from Pleasant Allen (9).David sold this 80 acres of land in Putnam county Indiana to Peter T Williams on 29 Dec 1842 (8).David was listed with his family in the 1850 Indiana census living in Putnam co, Jefferson twp where he was 43 years old and listed as born in Tennessee (7).David's eldest son Frederick purchased and patented land in Wayne co Iowa 5 June 1854 (11).David and Charlotte did not appear in the 1856 State of Iowa census in Wayne county, Benton twp though William Long and Margeret Poplin Long were listed (6).According to Sarah Poplin Gibbs's obituary, the Poplins came to Wayne county from Putnam county Indiana in 1859 (13).Listed in the 1860 Iowa Census in Wayne county, Benton twp, a 59 y/o farmer, born in North Carolina (2). Charlotte and some of their younger children were still living with him (2). In 1869, after the death of his daughter Margeret, he was made the guardian of her young children Charles R, Lydia and James Long (3).He submitted his guardians report to the Probate court Jan 1871 (3).
Listed in the 1870 Iowa Census still in Wayne county and in Benton twp (1).He was then 75 y/o, born in North Carolina, real estate valued at $2500, personal at $150 (1).His wife Charlotte and son Hamilton were living with his as were the young children of his deceased daughter Margeret Long (1). 10 Aug 1871 David and Charlotte sold 123 1/2 acres of land to their son Frederick (14). 1869-1871 David and the Garnes family were attendees of the Methodist Church in North Corydon (16).In 1880 he and Charlotte were living alone in Benton twp where he was 79 y/o, born in North Carolina and both parents born in North Carolina (5).
16 Sept 1882, David Poplin was judged insane by the proper authorities and Sanders Walker was made his legal guardian (4).In view of his age at this time, it may be that he was suffering from Alzheimer's and not true insanity.Jan 1883, Sanders Walker had sold David's land and after expenses of purchasing clothing for his ward a small amount of $38.65 was left (4).In an obituary for his son Fred Poplin in 1899, David is referred to as Rev Poplin (15).

Notes for Charlotte McKinney: Charlotte appeared in the 1850 Indiana census, living with her husband and children in Putnam county, Jefferson twp where she was listed as 38 years old and born in New York (4).She and David were in Wayne co Iowa, Benton twp by 1860 where she was listed as 49 years old and born in Pennsylvania (5).18 April 1861 following a judgement ruled against Fred Poplin in a court case against William Miles, some of Fred's land was sold to satisfy this judgment (9).During the auction, Charlotte was able to bid on and purchase some of this land (9).In 1870 she and David were still in Wayne co Benton twp and she was listed as 60 y/o born in Pennsylvania (1).The children of her daughter Margeret were also living with them including Lydia (1).10 Aug 1871 Charlotte and David sold 123 1/2 acres of land to Frederick Poplin (8).She and David were living together, alone, in 1880 still in Benton twp, where she was 69 years old, born in PA, both parents born in PA (3).David was declared insane in Sept 1882(2) most likely the victim of Alzheimer's Disease. Charlotte died 12 July 1884 at 11 pm in Corydon Iowa (6).
