Notes for Stuart Winans King:
Stuart Winans King Sr.
KING, SR., , STUART WINANS Born February 4, 1951, to Carey Gray King, Jr., and Judith Winans King, died after a battle with cancer Wednesday in his Dallas home. He married the love of his life Nell Deen Barrier on November 28, 1982. Stuart and Nell have two children, Stuart Winans, Jr., and Judith Jeanne. Stuart considered them his pride and joy. A lifelong resident of Dallas, he was graduated by Highland Park High School, where he was a member of the varsity football team and founding member of the James Brown fan club. He continued his education at the University of Texas, actively participating as a writer with the Daily Texan and working on his BA in journalism. After graduating in 1973, he served as press secretary for the head of the Texas State Legislature Appropriations Committee and helped run a campaign for a gubernatorial candidate, beginning a political interest and involvement that continued until he died. Stuart attended SMU Law School and served on the law review. After law school, he worked in the oil and telecom industries. Stuart focused a good amount of his energy on the institutions close to his heart. He was involved with Camp Grady Spruce, actively fund raising and serving as chairman of the board. In keeping with his love of the outdoors, he was also a member of Ferndale Club. Stuart sent his children to the Episcopal School of Dallas, where he loved to serve. Nicknamed Coach King by players, Stuart was the unofficial Spirit Dad of ESD-he always donned a school cap and a Hawaiian shirt in support of the teams. He officially served ESD as president of the Booster Club, raising funds for the teams he loved. He loved to travel, spending many years working in Europe. His friends and family described him as tender-hearted, a comedian, and highly intellectual. The practical joker that he was, Stuart wanted it noted that he was a member of the NBA and of the prestigious Sams Club. He was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his wife, their two children; his father, and wife Lucille King; brothers, Carey and wife Mary, Chris and wife Cody, loving sister Elisabeth; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial will be held Saturday, October 29, at 2 p.m. at St. Michaels Church, 8011 Douglas, Dallas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Episcopal School of Dallas, 4100 Merrell Road, Dallas, TX 75229.
