Herd Clark Shrout, 84, W. Water St., Flemingsburg, Ky. passed away September 17. 2003. He was the beloved husband of Helen Duncan Shrout and they would have been married 64 years on September 20,2003. he was born in Nicholas County on 6/29/1919, the son of the late Leona Blake and Clark Shrout. He was raised from an early age at the Christian Church Orphanage in Louisville,Ky. Herd attended Louisville Male High School. Herd was a retired postal employee having started his career as a city carrier and then a rural route carrier. He was know to deliver more than mail, if a postal patron needed a loaf of bread, etc. He also found more than mail waiting in the mailbox for him, baked goodies, etc. for his many acts of kindness & concern. Herd served in the United States Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany having been captured at the Battle of the Bulge. Herd loved life and had been an avid bowler. He also loved baseball, having played many years with the Flemingsburg Aces. He helped form Little League baseball in Fleming County. In 1995 a little league field sponsored by the Kiwanis Club was named in his honor. He also attended over 45 opening days of the Cincinnati Reds and was a avid UK Basketball fan. He was a former boy scout leader and in 1998 his former boy scouts many of them retired honored him with a dinner and a letter of thanks for is guidance. Herd was a member of the Flemingsburg Christian Church where he had served as a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. He was a lifetime of the Kiwanis Club, American Legion and VFW having served various offices in these organization . His love for children and people in general were fulfilled by charitable deeds he always participated in with his Kiwanis Club. On June 14,2003 he was honored by motorcycle members of the Rolling Thunder Ky chapter 3 during a celebration of Flag Day by raising a POW-MIA flag at the Fleming County Courthouse. He was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Brenda Shrout Mahan on 6/30/2002. Survivors include a daughter Marilyn Mitchell and her husband, Larry of Flemingsburg, and a son Rodney Shrout and his wife Sharon, Louisville, Ky a son-in law, Williams Mohan, Moncks Corner, SC. Seven Grandchildren Adam Mitchell (Lorie), Lexington, KY , Andrew Mitchell (Ramona), Flemingsburg, KY , Forest Mohan, Columbia SC, Will Mohan, Atlanta Ga. Shawna Shrout, Jonathan Shrout, Tyler Shrout all of Louisville, Ky. Five Great grandchildren, Abraham, Aaron and Addison Mitchell of Lexington, KY. Andrew 'Evan' II and Analiese Mitchell of Flemingsburg, Ky. A cousin Bonnie Cummins of Carlisle, KY. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday September 20,2003 at Denton-Workman Funeral Home, Burial will follow at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6-9 on Friday at the Funeral Home. Caskets bearers will be his six grandsons, Honorary bearers will be Bobby Porter, Joe Fleming Kissick, Alden Manning, Tim Fritz, Parkey Thompson, Calvin Hazelrigg, Dillard Bare, his Boy scout troop members and his fellow Kiwanis members.
