In spite of the claims of other family historians, Daniel was baptised, not born, on 9 Apr, 1703.(Reformed KirchenBuchen, Oggersheim, Pfalz, DEU.)Given the usual practice of the German Reformed community of the day, that would place his birth sometime between 04 Apr and 06 Apr of 1703.
Daniel Schuy arrived in the Pennsylvania Colony on 19 Sep, 1732, aboard the Johnson from Rotterdam.Apparently unable to write his name, he was originally listed as Daniel "Schwe" (an inadvertent Anglicazation of "Juy"?) on List A (Passenger List), then recorded as Daniel "Schew"(An accidential transposition of the original mistake?) on List B (Signers of the Oath of Allegiance), and finally, on List C (Signers of the Oath of Abjuration) he appears as Danl Schuhl.With Daniel were Maria Margaretha (Schilling), his wife, "Lodawick" - the clerk's bungled attempt at "Ludwig", the nickname of Lewis Henry, a son, and Anna Maria, their eldest daughter.The name of his younger son, Johannes, is absent from the list.

The spelling of the Shuey name went through a series of transformations in just one or two generations.From "Juy" or"Jouy", the family name when they fled France to escape brutal Catholic persecution, to "Schwe" when misunderstood by a ship's clerk, to "Schew" at disembarkation from the same ship, and"Schuhy" and "Shewey" on colonial tax roles. Then, briefly, in the late 1700s it seemed to settle on "Schuy".It may well had seen other forms, perhaps intentionally by the family as they sought to fit ito their new society, until it finally emerged as "Shuey".(Though some descendants to this day use Shewey, Schuey, Shueey, and even Shoey.)
