The Skretteberg family...with Norwegian roots !
Updated September 6, 2000Though all Skretteberg's have their ancestral roots in Norway, we are not all related "by blood".Our name does however tie us all to one, very large farm called "Skretteberg". The farm is first mentioned in a book indicating the sale of the farm by Thorleif Ormsson & his wife, Brynhild Olafsdatter to Gudbjorn Gudbrandsson in the year 1456. Over time, parts of this huge farm were sold off to families who dropped their own surname and took on the farm-name as their new surname. This was quite common until the "maintaining" of surnames became law (more or less) around 1920.In 1966, there were 50 homes standing on the original farm-site.The SKRETTEBERG farm was the second-largest farm ever in the parish of MODUM.It is located in the "fylke" (county) of "Buskerud".The exact location of the once-huge farm is ; walking distance just west of the train station for the hamlet called "SYSLE".Part of the farm is bordered on the south side by the river "Snarumselva". The railway line lays north of the farm. This railway line is called the "Kroderen banen" and although rarely used, has an old-fashioned train as an attraction during the tourist season. This allows one to take a railway ride close by the SKRETTEBERG farm. The railway line terminates at the Kroderen lake in the parish called "Krodsherad".There is an ancient grave (possibly Iron-Age/Viking era) located on what was once part of Skretteberg farm.As of this contribution date of October 1999, Skretteberg's live in Norway, Canada, U.S.A., & Scotland. | |
