Notes for Calvin (John Calvin) Shoup:
[Shoup.FTW]
Killed in action at the battle of Tom's Brook on October 9, 1964.One account, in Rev. Nair's booklet has him trying to capture a party of Union soldiers by himself and indicates he was under the influence of liquor.Official record however says that he was killed in action
that day, when Rosser and Lomax battled Torbert, and Torbert won. This battle was taking place as Sheridan's troops burned the Valley, and two days earlier had burned Cal's family's barns and granaries.Another source recently found lists him as dieing on October 15, 1864.His brother Henry's obiturary says he was mortally wounded, which would mean he died later of his wounds, and that would make the October 15th date viable.
Also in Nair's book it says that Cal bought a home from George Rader. This home was later lived in by Isaac Acker and Sallie Shirkey Shoup, and their son David, and Cal's and Sallie's daughter, Carrie, whom Isaac helped raise. In the early 1900's David and his wife Martha were living there.
Cal is mentioned several times in John Q. Winfield's letters to his wife Sallie.Copies of those mentions are in the white notebook
accompanying this information.

Jake Shoup was killed at Gettysburg in July of 1863, and Cal was wounded.I suspect that Cal wounded.I suspect he came home to recover and married Sallie as soon as he could, the death of his brother propelling him to do so more quickly, perhaps.Cal was then himself killed at Tom's Brookin October of 1864.Carrie is 15 in the 1880 census, so it is highly probable that she was born sometime in 1864, and that he never saw her.
