According to family legend, R. B. Smithdid not have a retirement fund. At the time he was 72 years of age, he lied and got others (one of his brothers) to back him up to say that he was only 62 years of age. He then applied for and got a job at the iron foundry to the rear of his Mansion Street, Coxsackieproperty as a common laborer. He apparently worked for the next three years in order to qualify for social security retirement pay. At this time the Social Security Death roll does not show him or at least , I cannot find his name. [1920 & 1930 census shows him with date of birth 1857, not 1868]
He died in 1951. R.W. Smith was in the Air Force at the time and came home on leave and attended his funeral prior to reporting for shipmentto Germany. This was May 1951. R.B. had a second wife, Eleanor Laird, I remember her as a tall, refined lady. She had been a school mate of his and her spouse had also passed on. They apparently spent several years together before they died.

For years, R.B. ran a bar and hotel (Mansion Street Hotel). Many of the hotel guests came up fromNY City. I remember him telling about the fact that he put a milk dispenser (with ice) where the guests could help themselves. He said that milk was cheap and the guests filled themselves up before meals and as a consequence did not eat very much.
As a "bartender" R.B. was famous (perhaps notorious)for his arguments. It did not matter which side of the argument he took, he was willing to argue on any subject, a trait that I seem to have inherited. My father R D Smith, often refused to take our family for a visit with RB since it would end up in an argument. Also, R.B. always kept a good (free) supply of heavily salted pretzels on the bar, he claimed it made them drink more beer.
Sometime around 1940, we all went on a picnic. At that time, R.B. cut a Willow treebranch to threaten me for some misdeed. He brought it home with him and as we got out of the car, he stuck it into the ground. It grew into a huge Willow Tree and I remember it still being there in the 1990's, some fifty years later.
One other incident that sticks in my memory: I waspreparing for a meal. I was in the kitchen and washed my hands with a wash cloth and put it back very wet. R.B. took me by the hand and we went to the head of the cellar stairs just to the rear of the kitchen. He took the washcloth and folded it in half and showed me how to wring it out properly. Something I have never failed to do for the rest of my life.
