Notes from Harry Buyce:
The only source history I have of Jesse's early days is verbal, and it is a good one. the older Gallup children say that their grandfather, David B., always said that he was born in Alexander Bay and came to Gilmantown when he was three years old. Apparently Jesse left Gilmantown as a young man to, "see the elephant", as the expression of the day went. He ended up in Alexandria Bay and met his wife to be, Hanah McCarthy. Her family were immigrants from Ireland, whose port of entry was Alex Bay, or somewhere nearby. This sounds odd today, but it is quite reasonable, because in the 19th centrury there was no designated port of entry for immigrants, as Ellis Island, NY later became. Probably they were married there and David B. was born. The eldest grandson, Harold Gallup, lived with the grandparents in his youth, so he heard the stories many times, as did some of the others.
Jesse ran a grist mill and a saw mill at Burnham Mills, which was located at the headwaters of the Sacandaga River, below Lake Pleasant.
