|NOTE: I HAVE MOVED MY DATA TO BOTH ROOTSWEB.COM AND ANCESTRY.COM; IF YOU HAVE ANY DIFFICULTY FINDING WHAT YOU NEED, PLEASE CONTACT ME VIA MY EMAIL ADDRESS.IN ADDITION, THERE IS A LINK BELOW TO MY COMPLETE DATABASE ON ROOTSWEB.|
This site is devoted to the descendants of William Smute, born 1596.I have created this site to share what information I have and to allow other Smoot descendants the opportunity to share their information with others.By submitting your Smoot ancestry I can keep my database up to date and help others find their family heritage.
Please note that I now include many of the descendants of the Smootz/Smoots line since many of them changed their name to Smoot. This line is predominantly from the Shenandoah County, Virginia area.
Much of what we know today comes from a book titled THE SMOOTS OF MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA.It was published by Harry Wright Newman in 1936.This book was well written and documents the history of our ancestry very well. Its biggest shortcoming is that sources are not documented so it is difficult to prove any relationships by citing this source. It does, however, provide enough information to lead the researcher to the appropriate sources.
I have taken the information from this book and input it into a genealogy database.I have been able to correct most of the errors found in the original book.In addition, I have been in contact with many other Smoot descendants who have been willing to share their data and I've kept the database as up to date as possible.I have also cross-referenced many of the relationships with the Census records from 1790-1940.
I am currently using The Master Genealogist to maintain this database. The reason is because it does an excellent job of allowing the researcher to document source information. It has been my experience that genealogy information is subject to a lot of errors, for many reasons. Thus, you can easily have three or more different dates of birth. This is why I use The Master Genealogist. It allows me to include multiple Tags for the same event(i.e., date of birth, date of death, etc.) and I can cite the various sources for each version.
UNPROVEN OR UNDOCUMENTED RELATIONSHIPS
One of the main Smoot connections that remains unproven concerns Dorothy Smoot, who married Thomas Durham, Sr.Please contact me if you have any documentation connecting Dorothy Smoot to William Smoot.
