Later sources identifythis Hrolf with Rollo of Normandy, an extremely doubtful identification. It isunlikely that there was any close relationship between the early dukes ofNormandy and the Orkney Jarls, and Rollo's parentage is unknown.
Here are my notes onROLLO, which I send in connection with a message sent
by Stewart Baldwin inwhich he says he suspects I took my data from the
"ridiculouslyunreliable Ancestral File" of the LDS. As you can see, this
isn't quite right.

Or: HROLFR the GANGER (walker), GANGE-ROLV,ROLF, ROLLO OF NORMANDY;
andlater in life,ROBERT; also HRO'LFR
"The central factof Norman history ... is ... the grant of Normandy and his
northern followers inthe year 911. ... For the actual occurences of that
year, we have only theaccount of a romancing historian of a hundred years
later, reenforced hereand there by the exceedingly scanty records of the
time. The main fact is clear, namely that theFrankish king, Charles the
Simple, granted Rolloas a fief a considerable part, the eastern part, of
later Normandy. Apparently Rollo did homage for his fied infeudal fashion
by placing his handsbetween the hands of the king, something, we are told,
which "neitherhis father, nor his grandfather, nor his great-grandfather
before him had everdone for any man." Legend goes onto relate, however,
that Rollo refused tokneel and kiss the king's foot, crying out in his own
speech, "No, byGod!" and that the companion to whom he delegated the
unwelcome obligationperformed it so clumsily that he overturned the king,
to the great merrimentof the assembled Northmen. ... As to Rollo's
personality, we haveonly the evidence of later Norman historians of
doubtful authority andthe Norse saga of HArold Fairhair. If,as seems
likely, their accountsrelate to the same person, he was known in the north
as Hrolf the Ganger, because he was so huge that no horse could carry him
and he must needs gangafoot. A pirate at home, he was driveninto exile by
the anger of KingHarold, whereupon he followed his trade in the Western
Isles and in Gaul, androse to be a great Jarl among his people. The saga
makes him a Norwegian, but Danish scholars have sought to prove him a Dane,
and more recently thecudgels have been taken up for his Swedish origin. To
me the NOrwegiantheory seems on the whole the most probable, being based on
a trustworthy saga andcorroborated by other incidental evidence. ... The
important fact is thatNorway, Denmark, and even more distant Sweden, all
contributed to thecolonists who settled in Normandy under Rollo and his
successors, and theachievements of the Normans thus become the common
heritage of theScandinavian race. (P) The colonizationof Normandy was, of
course, only a smallpart of the work of this heroic age of Scandinavian
expansion. The great emigration from the North in theninth and tenth
centuries has beenexplained in part by the growth of centralized government
and the consequentdeparture of the independent, the turbulent, and the
untamed for new fieldsof adventure; but its chief cause was doubtless that
which lies back ofcolonizing movements in all ages, the growth of
population and theneed of more room. Five centuriesearlier this
land-hunger had pushedthe Germanic tribes across the Rhine and Danube and
produced the greatwandering of the peoples which destroyed the Roman
empire; and the Vikingraids were simply a later aspect of this same
*Vo"lkerwanderung*,retarded by the outlying position of the Scandinavian
lands and by thegreater difficulty of migration by sea. For, unlike the
Goths who swept acrossthe map of Europe in vast curves of marching men, or
the Franks who movedforward by slow stages of gradual settlement in their
occupation of RomanGaul, the Scandinavian invaders were men of the sea and
migrated inships."
--- Charles Homer Haskins, *The Normans inEuropean History*, Boston &
NY, 1915, p 26-30 passim. From p 48 & 50: "At this point the fundamental
question forces itselfupon us, how far was Normandy affected by
Scandinavianinfluences? What in race and language,in law and custom, was
the contribution ofthe north to Normandy? And the answermust be that in
most respects thetangible contribution was slight. Whatever may have been
the state of affairsin the age of colonization and settlement, by the
century which followedthe Normans had become to a surprising degree
absorbed by theirenvironment. ..... What, then, was the Scandinavian
contribution to themaking of Normandy if it was neither law nor speech nor
race? First and foremost, it was Normandy itself, created as a distinct
entity by the Normanoccupation and the grant to Rollo and his followers,
without whom it wouldhave remained an undifferentiated part of northern
France. Next, a newelement in the population, numerically small in
proportion to the ass,but a leaven to the whole --- quick to absorb
Frankish law andChristian culture but retaining its northern qualities of
enterprise, of daring, and of leadership. It is no accidentthat the names
of the leaders inearly Norman movements are largely Norse. And finally a
race of princes,high-handed and masteful but with a talent for political
organization,state-builders at home and abroad, who made Normandy the
strongest and mostcentralized principality in France and joined to it a
kingdom beyond theseas which became the strongest state in western Europe."

The definitive establishment of theNormans, to whom the country owes
its name, took placein 911, when by the treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte,
concluded between KingCharles the Simple of France and Rolf or Rollo, chief
of the Normans, theterritory comprising the town of Rouen and a few 'pagi'
situated on thesea-coast was ceded to the latter; but the terms of the
treaty areill-defined, and it is consequently almost impossible to find out
the exact extent ofthis territory or to know whether Brittany was at this
time made a feudaldependency of Normandy. But thechronicler Dudo of
Saint-Quentin'sstatement that Rollo married Gisela, daughter of Charles the
Simple, must beconsidered to be legendary work of Dudo of Saint-Quentin
[who?] is practicallyour only authority.
Rollo died in 927 and was succeeded byhis son William ...
--- (Source ???)
"Charles [theSimple], the son-in-law of eEward, constrained thereto by
Rollo, through asuccession of calamities, conceded to him that part of Gaul
which at present iscalled Normandy. It would be tedious torelate for how
many years, and withwhat audacity, the Normans disquieted every place from
the British ocean, asI have said, to the Tuscan sea. FirstHasten, and
then Rollo; who, bornof noble lineage among the Norwegians, though obsolete
from its extremeantiquity, was banished, by the king's command, from his
own country, andbrought over with multitudes, who were in danger, either
from debt orconsciousness of guilt, and whom he had allured by great
expectations ofadvantage. Betaking himself thereforeto piracy, after his
cruelty had raged onevery side at pleasure, he experienced a check at
Chartres. For the townspeople, relying neither on armsnor fortifications,
piously impoored theassistance of the blessed Virgin Mary. The shift too
of the virgin, whichCharles the Bald displayed to the winds on the
samparts, thronged bythe garrison, after the fashion of a banner. The
enemy on seeing itbegan to laught, and to direct their arrows at it. This,
however, was not donewith impunity; for presently their eyes became dim,
and they could neitherretreat nor advance. The townsmen, withjoy
perceiving this, indulged themselves in a plentiful slaughter of them, as
far as fortunepermitted. Rollo, however, whom Godreserved for the true
faith, escaped, andsoon after gained Rouen and the neighboring cities by
force of arms, in theyear of our Lord 876, and one year before the death of
Charles the Bald, whose grandson Lewis, as is before mentioned, vanquished
the Normans, but didnot expel them; but Charles, the brother of that Lewis,
grandson of Charlesthe Bald, by his son Lewis, as I have said aboce,
repeatedlyexperiencing, from unsuccessful conflicts, that fortune gave him
nothing which she tookfrom others, resolved, after consulting his nobility,
that it was advisableto make a show of royal munificence, when he was
unable to repelinjury; and, in a friendly manner, sent for Rollo. He was
at this time faradvanced in years; and, consequently, easily inclined to
pacific measures. It was therefore determined by treaty, thathe should be
baptized, and holdthat country of the king as his lord. The inbred and
untameable ferocity ofthe man may well be imagined, for, on receiving this
gift, as the bystanders suggested to him, that he ought to kiss the foot of
his benefactor, disdaining to kneel down, he seized the king's foot and
dragged it to his mouthas he stood erect. The king falling onhis back,
the Normans began tolaugh, and the Franks to be indignant; but Rollo
apologized for hisshameful conduct, by saying that it was the custom of his
country. Thus the affair being settled, Rolloreturned to Rouen, and there
died."

tr John Allen Giles,London (Henry G Bohn) 1847, p 125-126
"It is not knownwhen Rollo arrived in the Viking kingdom [in Normandy].
Dudo says that he tookRouen in 877, but most historians are agreed that
Rollo probably did notappear in Francia until the early tenth century. The
possibility existshowever, that Dudo is preserving a belief that Vikings
had been establishedin the Rouen area from about this time. Rollo is
thought to have beenNorwegian rather than Danish, and later Icelandic
sources identify himwith Hrolf the Ganger (walker), son of Ragnvald earl of
Moer, who had a careeras a Viking before settling in Francia. He married a
Christian woman andhis son William, according to the Lament of William
Longsword, was bornoverseas. (P) Nothing more in knownabout the 'Treaty
of St Clair-sur-Epte'concluded in a personal interview between Charles the
Simple and Rollo thanDudo tells us, and he has been accused of inventing
the meeting. That a cession of territory in the Seine, extending as far
west as the mouth ofthe Seine on the coast and near the source of the Eure
inland is affirmed bya charter of Charles the Simple dated 14 March 918.
..... Flodoard addsthe information that Rollo received baptism and the
Frankish name Robertwith the cession of this territory. (P)Rollo seems to
have been made a countin 911, with the traditional duties assigned to a
Carolingian count, namely, protection and the administration of justice. He
was certainlysubordinate to the Frankish king. Withthe proliferation of
titles accorded theleader of the Normandy Vikings in later sources, some
historians hacesuggested that Rollo was made a duke, but Werner has argued
that there was noNorman *marchio* before 950-6, and no duke before
987-1006, that is,after Hugh Capet had gained the throne of France. .....
(P) Rollo appears tohave received his territory on similar terms as the
Bretons had received theCotentin, except that the bishoprics were also
ceded. ..... Inexchange, Rollo was to defend the Seine from other Vikings,
accept baptism andbecome the *fidelis* of the Frankish king. That there
were other groups ofVikings in the region, particularly in the western part
of Normandy, isclear. The west stayed pagan longer; itwas a century
before a bishop wasappointed to the Cotnetin. ..... (P) The arrangement
made in 911 provedsuccessful ..... The area of Normandy by 933 corresponded
to the area of thearchdiocese of Rouen, with the seven *civitates* of
Rouen, Bayeux, Avranches, Evreux, See's, Lisieux and Coutances. The
fortunes of thebishops of Rouen and of the (principes* of Normandy were in
fact closelyassociated from the very beginning."

The wife of William III(Towhead) was called Adela in his own charters (942 & 962). The Normanchroniclers Dudo of St.Quentin and William of Jumieges in the 11th century, saythat Rollo had by Popa daughter of Berenger his son William Longsword and adaughter called Gerloc, who William III later married. I think a Frenchhistorian suggested that Gerloc = Adela. (this is from William of Jumieges: Ithink Dudo has roughly the same thing). Reigned 1066-1087.Duke of Normandy 1035-1087. Invaded England defeated and killed his rivalHarold at the Battle of Hastings and became King. The Norman conquest ofEngland was completed by 1072 aided by the establishment of feudalism underwhich his followers were granted land in return for pledges of service andloyalty. King William was noted for hisefficient if harsh rule. His administration relied upon Norman and otherforeign personnel especially Lanfranc Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1085 startedthe Domesday Book.
NOTES: William of theHouse of Normandy; The first Norman King; On 28 Sep 1066 William secured thesanction of Pope Alexander II for a Norman invasion of England. By 1070 theNorman conquest of England was complete. William introduced the Continentalsystem of feudalism; by the Oath of Salisbury of 1086 all landlords swore allegianceto William, thus establishing the precedent that a vassal's loyalty to the kingoverrode his fealty to his immediate lord. During a campaign against KingPhilip I of France, William fell from a horse and was fatally injured. Williamwas the illegitimate son of Robert I, duke of Normandy and Arletta, a tanner'sdaughter. He is sometimes called "William the Bastard".
REF: "Falls theShadow" Sharon Kay Penman: William requested a large number of Jews tomove to England after his conquest. They spoke Norman & did well under his reign.
REF: British MonarchyOfficial Website: The victory of William I, 'the Conqueror' (reigned 1066-1087)at Hastings and his subsequent coronation in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day1066 did not give him complete control of England. Remaining resistance was, however, severely crushed and castles were built to control the country(including a fortress on the site of Windsor Castle, and the White Tower at theTower of London). The lands of defeated Saxon nobles were given to William'sfollowers in return for military service by a certain number of knights, sothat the tenants' foremost obligation was allegiance to the king. This firmlyestablished the feudal system. In 1086, William commissioned the Domesday Book,to record land holdings for the
assessment of taxesand other dues. William spent long periods in Normandy to maintain hisauthority there, dealing with rebellions and French invasions.
William died in 1087leaving Normandy to his eldest son, Robert, and England to his second son,William II Rufus (reigned 1087-1100).
REF: "RoyalDescents of Famous People" Mark Humphreys: Steve Jones' book "In the Blood: God, Genes, &Destiny" 1996, estimates that 25% of the population of Britain isdescended from William the Conqueror. Consider you need two parents, fourgrandparents, etc. Assuming an averageof abt 25 years per generation, you only need go back to 1200, quite withinhistorical times, to need more separate ancestors than the population of theworld. Therefor we all must descendfrom cousin marriages, many times over, even within the last few hundred years.Davenport claimed "no people of English descent are more distantly relatedthan 30th cousins".

The problem has beenand maybe still is that William the Conqueror and
Matilda (dau. ofBaldwin V of Flanders & Adelaide of France) had relatively
great difficulty isobtaining a papal dispensation for their marriage. It
was not immediatelyobvious that there was any impediment that needed a
dispensation. Thisproblem of what the relationship between Matilda and
William was thatrequired a dispensation generated a vigorous debate earlier
this century. Weis orWeis's source (as you report it) goes for a theory
that makes Matilda andWilliam cousins of sorts.

Pope Calixtus II
Blue blood of bluebloods was Guy of Vienne who became Calixtus II. Guy was
born probably atQuingey in 1060, the son of William, count of Burgundy. By
blood or marriage hewas related to Emperor Henry V, Henry I of England, Louis VI of France, andAlfonso VII of Castile. Guy became a priest when quite young and soon rose tobe archbishop of Vienne. He acted as legate for Paschal II and held a councilat Vienne which boldly excommunicated Henry V when that monarch wrested theprivilege of lay investiture from poor Paschal. The council urged Paschal toconfirm its decrees and hinted that he had better do so--or suffer worse! SincePaschal did so, there was no trouble; but the incident reveals a lack of perfectionin Guy's obedience and loyalty. He was, however, a strong reform bishop and apopular one. Elected pope by the cardinals at Cluny, Guy was most reluctant toaccept; but finally all objections were overruled and he was enthroned atVienne on February 9, 1119, as Calixtus II.
The outstanding eventof this pontificate was the settlement of the lay investiture quarrel. WhileCalixtus captured Henry's antipope at Sutri, Henry was meeting much oppositionin Germany. And all this time a great tide of public opinion favoring apeaceful settlement was rising swiftly. After some preliminary negotiations,Henry held a great diet at Worms in September 1122 to discuss the matter. Afterheated discussions, the papal legates and the Emperor drew up a concordat or agreementbetween Church and State. By this concordat the Emperor renounced the right ofinvestiture by ring and crozier, thus conceding the independence of thespiritual power. The Pope allowed investiture by scepter as a symbol of thetemporal fiefs connected with the bishopric or abbey. Thus while the principleof spiritual independence was saved, the legitimate rights of civil rulers tosome control over fiefs was safeguarded. The Emperor guaranteed free elections, but the Pope agreed that the Emperor could be present at elections, aconcession which could easily make free elections a mockery.
The Concordat of Wormswas hailed as a victory for the Church and sent papal
prestige skyrocketing. In cold sober fact it left the Church still far too open to
secular control. At anyrate Henry was released from censures, and men rejoiced in the peace thatfollowed.
In March 1123 Calixtusheld the ninth ecumenical council, the First Lateran. This, attended by over300 bishops and 600 abbots, confirmed the Concordat of Worms. It passed the usual reform decrees and onestriking new one. Before this, if a priest married, the marriage, thoughillicit and sinful, was valid. Now such a marriage was declared null and void;in other words, no marriage.
Calixtus II favored St.Norbert and approved the Premonstratensian order. He also approved the Knightsof St. John or Hospitallers, that famous crusading order. An able spiritualruler, Calixtus proved also a capable king. Heads literally rolled when hestormed the castles of lawless Roman lords. Even in turbulent Rome itself therewas a momentary pause in the clash of arms. No wonder an old chronicler callsCalixtus II, "the father of peace."
Calixtus II died onDecember 13, 1124.

There has been a longdebate over her paternity (i.e. which of her mother's two husbands was father -Richard III (d.1027) duke/count of Normandy or Baldwin V (d.1065) count ofFlanders). At one time it was also suggested that Judith might be Baldwin'ssister. ES II:79 goes for the Richard III option.
