Later sources identifythis Hrolf with Rollo of Normandy, an extremely doubtful identification. It isunlikely that there was any close relationship between the early dukes ofNormandy and the Orkney Jarls, and Rollo's parentage is unknown.

Here are my notes onROLLO, which I send in connection with a message sent

by Stewart Baldwin inwhich he says he suspects I took my data from the

"ridiculouslyunreliable Ancestral File" of the LDS. As you can see, this

isn't quite right.

"The central factof Norman history ... is ... the grant of Normandy and his

northern followers inthe year 911.  ...  For the actual occurences of that

year, we have only theaccount of a romancing historian of a hundred years

later, reenforced hereand there by the exceedingly scanty records of the

time.  The main fact is clear, namely that theFrankish king, Charles the

Simple, granted Rolloas a fief a considerable part, the eastern part, of

later Normandy.  Apparently Rollo did homage for his fied infeudal fashion

by placing his handsbetween the hands of the king, something, we are told,

which "neitherhis father, nor his grandfather, nor his great-grandfather

before him had everdone for any man."  Legend goes onto relate, however,

that Rollo refused tokneel and kiss the king's foot, crying out in his own

speech, "No, byGod!" and that the companion to whom he delegated the

unwelcome obligationperformed it so clumsily that he overturned the king,

to the great merrimentof the assembled Northmen.  ...  As to Rollo's

personality, we haveonly the evidence of later Norman historians of

doubtful authority andthe Norse saga of HArold Fairhair.  If,as seems

likely, their accountsrelate to the same person, he was known in the north

as Hrolf the Ganger,because he was so huge that no horse could carry him

and he must needs gangafoot.  A pirate at home, he was driveninto exile by

important fact is thatNorway, Denmark, and even more distant Sweden, all

contributed to thecolonists who settled in Normandy under Rollo and his

course, only a smallpart of the work of this heroic age of Scandinavian

expansion.  The great emigration from the North in theninth and tenth

centuries has beenexplained in part by the growth of centralized government

which lies back ofcolonizing movements in all ages, the growth of

Robert between Rolloand William I, and makes Robert the conqueror of

     The definitive establishment of theNormans, to whom the country owes

its name, took placein 911, when by the treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte,

concluded between KingCharles the Simple of France and Rolf or Rollo, chief

of the Normans, theterritory comprising the town of Rouen and a few 'pagi'

situated on thesea-coast was ceded to the latter; but the terms of the

treaty areill-defined, and it is consequently almost impossible to find out

"It is not knownwhen Rollo arrived in the Viking kingdom [in Normandy].

Dudo says that he tookRouen in 877, but most historians are agreed that

Rollo probably did notappear in Francia until the early tenth century. The

possibility existshowever, that Dudo is preserving a belief that Vikings

had been establishedin the Rouen area from about this time. Rollo is

The wife of William III(Towhead) was called Adela in his own charters (942 & 962). The Normanchroniclers Dudo of St.Quentin and William of Jumieges in the 11th century, saythat Rollo had by Popa daughter of Berenger his son William Longsword and adaughter called Gerloc, who William III later married. I think a Frenchhistorian suggested that Gerloc = Adela. (this is from William of Jumieges: Ithink Dudo has roughly the same thing). Ademar of Chabannes in III, 23 actually say that Ebles (manzer) marriedAdela daughter of Roso/Rollo

and begat WilliamTowhead from that marriage. He seems to have been quite confused about this,for in an earlier version of his work (the 'H' text) he says that Ramnulf II(Ebles father) married 'Adelina daughter of Ruin' (=Rollo).

The wife of WilliamIII (Towhead) was called Adela in his own charters (942 & 962). The Normanchroniclers Dudo of St.Quentin and William of Jumieges in the 11th century, saythat Rollo had by Popa daughter of Berenger his son William Longsword and adaughter called Gerloc, who William III later married. I think a Frenchhistorian suggested that Gerloc = Adela. (this is from William of Jumieges: Ithink Dudo has roughly the same thing). Ademar of Chabannes in III, 23 actually say that Ebles (manzer) marriedAdela daughter of Roso/Rollo

and begat WilliamTowhead from that marriage. He seems to have been quite confused about this,for in an earlier version of his work (the 'H' text) he says that Ramnulf II(Ebles father) married 'Adelina daughter of Ruin' (=Rollo).

First (of only two) ofthe Saxon Restoration KIngs of England after the Danes were driven out.  Reigned 1042-1066.  Named for his piety & his foundation of a new WestminsterAbbey (consecrated in 1065).  He livedin Normandy 1016-1041 & his early reign was dominated by rivalry betweenhis Norman favorites & his father-in-law. After 1053 the Goodwins were in the ascendant.  Edward's childlessness led ultimately to the Normanconquest.  He was canonized in 1161.
