Notes for Michael Mathias: was born in Hempfield township, near Madi-son, in 1822. He lived there all his life, giving his attention to farming and distilling-. Later he gave up distilling and gave his entire attention to agricultural pursuits. In politics he was a staunch Democrat, and in religious faith a member of the Lutheran church. He married Elizabeth Kunkle, and seven children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy. The living are : Urias, a carpenter, of West Newton > Mary Rebecca, wife of John Lostetter ; J. Michael (see forward); Catherine, wife of Eli Weaver; William, died in childhood. |

Notes for Daniel River:
Daniel River served as a 2nd Lt. in Company "E" of the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry.He served from July 1861 to August 1863.During that time, his company saw ferocious fighting at the battles of Fredericksburg and Gettysburg (in the Peach Orchard).Daniel's name is inscribed on the wall of the massive Pennsylvania monument on the Gettysburg Battlefield site.
After the death of his first wife, Phoebe (possibly in childbirth in 1861 -- the birth of their sixth child, Lincoln River). He very quickly remarried in 1865 toMary Fulmer,His second wife was the daughter of Jonathan and Catharine Fulmer.Mary was about 15 years younger than Daniel.Daniel and Mary had three children--William Henry River born in Armstrong County, PA in 1866; Elisabeth (of whom nothing further is known); and Miles Elmer born in Manetta Furnace (?), Ohio on 9 Mar 1971. No record can be found of the family on the 1870 census.
For the most part, Miles Elmer went by his middle name, Elmer.Mary was born and grew up in Clarion County, PA.For a time, Daniel and his first wife, Phoebe, lived in Clarion County, PA, so this may have been how Daniel and Mary met.Daniel and Mary were married in Rimersburg, PA.Daniel was killed in a cave-in in a coal mine in the Sterling Mines in Houtzdale, Clearfield Co., PA on July 20, 1874.Mary's two sons, Miles and William were sent to live in other households.Miles is listed as a "servant" on the 1880 census.William is listed as a "bound boy" on the 1880 census.Mary is living with her brother, George, and his family on the 1880 census.At some point, Mary remarried and she died in 1904.

Notes for Eliza Jane River: Eliza Jane's mother died when she was quite young--possibly 4 or 5 years old.It appears that the children may have been separated and raised by other family members or friends.Her brother, Lincoln, is found on the 1870 census living in Centre Co. at a boarding house with a family named Barto.Eliza Jane's husband, Winfield, died very young at about 35 years of age by what was described as a stomach ulcer or tumor.The story in the family is that her two oldest boys--George and Edward--took their father into the woods behind their house and buried him.Eliza Jane raised the six children by herself.They are found on the 1900 census living in Young Township but the name is misspelled as "Hagins." |
