JOHN LESTER "JACK" ALLEN
John Lester "Jack" Allen Sr. 79, of Milford, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, in Peninsula Regional
Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. He was born in Milford, the son of the late John Wesley and
Sadie Wilkins Allen and was a 1944 graduate of Milford High School. He served his country
as a 1st Sgt. in the Delaware National Guard for many years. He owned and operated Rumpstich
Machine Works, Inc. in Milford for more than 55 years. Mr. Allen was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout
Troop 308 in Milford for 16 years in the 1960's and early 1970's. He was currently serving as
Chairman of the Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission where he has been a
commissioner for more than 35 years. Mr. Allen was a charter member of the Shawnee Country
Club, where he served on the Board of Directors. He was an original member of the Board of
Directors of the Milford Branch of the Sussex Trust Company before they merged with Wilmington
Trust Company, after which he served on the Advisory Board of Wilmington Trust Company. He
enjoyed stock car racing and was one of the owners of the Blue Hen Racing Team. He also
sponsored many other local stock car racing teams. He enjoyed cooking for his friends at the
"Bennett Retreat Gang's" sportsman's club in Slaughter Neck. He was a member of Ducks
Unlimited and the Delaware Fraternal Order of Police. In addition to his parents, he was preceded
in death by his son, John L. "Jack" Allen Jr. in 1993. He is survived by his wife of 57 years,
Helen R. Allen; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald R. and Denise Allen, of Dover; one daughter
and son-in-law, Joan A. and Michael Maloney, of Milford; a daughter-in-law, Sharon C. Allen, of
Milford; one sister, Audrey Savage, of Milford; and five grandchildren, J. Wesley Allen, Erika
Lyn Allen, Megan Maloney, Tanner Allen and Chelsea Allen. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m.
Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at the Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford where
friends may call from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Friends may also call on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
at the church. Interment will be in Milford Community Cemetery, Rt. 113, Milford. In lieu of flowers
the family suggests contributions to either the Milford Historical Society, P.O. Box 352, Milford,
DE 19963 or to the Milford Little League, P.O. Box 404, Milford, DE 19963. Arrangements by Lofland
Funeral Home, Milford.
