Notes for CHARLES FLOYD:
NOTE TO FLOYD MEMBERS:If you are a male Floyd, here is a good way to help in the research into the Floyd family. Sharon at >Loveland1220@aol.com< is organizing a Floyd DNA site:
"Pat--can you put out the word to Floyd surname males to see if any of them want to participate with us in this project? We are using the lab at Ancestry and they are having a 40% off special. We are using the 46 marker kit which provides the closest possible match potential. I have also posted results on >Familytree.com<Their public (non-member) site is Ysearch.com.I haven't had any close matches yet, but I think the technology is still too new for most people to want to participate.Plus, they're not giving it away for free.I can understand hesitation. Anyhow, I just thought I'd ask. Thanks for your help.I'll keep you posted if any new information comes along.Sharon"END NOTE
Charles was a Burgess of Va., according to Anna Cartlidge (AMC). His will has Samuel born about 1718. Anna gives four sons: John, James, Matthew, and Samuel, the last the "father of Charles of Georgia."
There are Eastern Shore records of cattlemarks in the late 17th century sent to me by Dave Mordy, incl "Charles Floyd, son of John Floyd," dated 1679 (see note under Mary Berry) which would inspire the thought that Charles was born by, say, 1660 and allow him to be 19 by this date. Other date of birth adjustments might be necessary. I will note they are adjusted by the "cattlemark date of 1679."
Children of CHARLES FLOYD and ELIZABETH --] are:
6. | i. | JOHN3 FLOYD, b. Abt. 1701; d. 1738.
ii. | MATTHEW FLOYD, b. Abt. 1705.
iii. | SARAH FLOYD, b. Abt. 1707.
iv. | MARY HESTER FLOYD, b. Abt. 1709.
v. | ELIZABETH FLOYD, b. Abt. 1711; m. CHARLES JOYNE19; b. Abt. 1710. |
Notes for ELIZABETH FLOYD: I suspect this Elizabeth is connected to the following query (note mention of James, which was the name of a brother of Elizabeth's). Ann C. Feinstein, <anndavid@webtv.net>, kindly wrote in February, 2001, about Charles and Elizabeth Joyne"Hello... found you on World Connect...I am looking for thelast name of Elizabethwho was married to Charles Joyne... She was made Administratrix of the estate of her husband Charles in April of 1754...On July 9, 1754, Inventory and appraisal of Charles Joyne estate returned by Elizabeth....By July 9, 1755, we have the following in the Northampton Order Book 24:"On a motion by Wm Holland and JAMES FLOYD, security for Elizabeth Joyne, it is ordered that Elizabeth's security take possession and make sale of the estate of the deceased for their indemnity"....Do you have a record of an Elizabeth Floydwho married a Charles Joyne in your family files?.... Any help or leads you can give me will be deeply appreciated.... Sincerely, Ann (editor: I am going to indicate Elizabeth's marriage to Charles Joyne based on these tentative findings.) Later, Ann writes: "...after I e-mailed you, I went back into my Joyne(s) Family files and found the following: Thomas Joynes bc 1710/d1747 Accomack co. Va. married a Catherine bc 1720/d1758.Also Accomack Co. Va... He is the father of the Charles Joyne(s) married to the Elizabeth I inquired about.... Two of Thomas's other children are named Mary FLOYD Joynes bc 1727 in Northampton Co. Va. and BERRY Joynes bc 1730 also NH Co. Va...Could Catherine be related to the Floyds? (there is also a son named Watkins Joynes bc 1735 NH. Co. Va... Are Charles and Berry Joynes first namestaken from the Floyd family?..." (Editor: indeed they are. Charles is very common and Berry Floydis Elizabeth Floyd's uncle. Perhaps it looks like this:Thomas Joyne m. Catherine Floyd, a daughter of John, Charles,Berry, or Matthew Floyd, the sons born ca. 1676-1682, sons of the first John Floyd. They had Mary Floyd, Berry and Charles Joyne. Charles Joyne thenmarries his cousin Elizabeth Floyd.) |
vi. | JAMES FLOYD, b. Abt. 1713.
7. | vii. | SAMUEL FLOYD, b. Abt. 1718, Northampton Co., VA; d. Abt. 1753, Northampton Co., VA. |
3.ESTHER2 FLOYD (JOHN1)20 was born Abt. 1665 in probably Northampton Co., VA21.She married EDMUND BYBEE22.He was born Abt. 1663 in Northampton Co., VA23.
Notes for ESTHER FLOYD:
Important note from Alex Luken, sent in December 2006:
Pat-I sent you the links last night to the documents in the VA archives that pertain to land grants. The John Floyd grant for the Accomack Co. property included a few other players, including Edmund Bibbie, a Clark, and someone else. The same group also had a prior land grant in Northampton Co., for Hogg's Island.Interestingly, Edmund Bibbie (also spelled Bybee, Bibby) appears to have been married to Esther Floyd.I wonder if the whole group has kinship.I think it is believed that Esther is the daughter of John Floyd/Mary Berry bunch.
Esther's son, Edmund Bibby III, married Mary Clark, daughter of Robert Clark.
Child of ESTHER FLOYD and EDMUND BYBEE is:
i. | EDMUND3 BIBBY III24, b. Abt. 1682, Northampton Co., VA25; m. MARY CLARK26, 01 October 1700; b. Abt. 168327. |
4.JOHN2 FLOYD II (JOHN1)28,29 was born Abt. 1675 in probably Northampton Co., VA30.He married MICHAL HARRIS31,32,33 Aft. 171334, daughter of PETER HARRIS and MICHAL [--?--].She was born Abt. 168235.
Notes for JOHN FLOYD II:
--These are my notes (or I credit others)which I have seen copied without reference to me. Please feel free to use them but cite me!--
Anna Cartlidge, op. cit., says he inherited his father's 100 acres in Northampton and half of Prout's Island. He is presumed to have three sons: John, James, and William. She wonders whether this could be William of Amherst? She later asserts that "we may never know who William's parents were, but it is my private opinion that they were (this) John Floyd, Jr., and Mrs. Burgomy."
Editor: I have come to believe that William Floyd "of Amherst" is not this John's sonWilliam, but his grandson. But readers ought to note that we have seen no proof.David Mordy however points out that it makes more sense that John, the father of William b 1721, would be born more likely in, say, 1700 and should be inserted as an intergenerational John Floyd between John at the head of this tree and William of Amherst County b abt 1721. I shall adopt this structure (Apr 2008).
If we change Burgomy to Burgamy or Burgany, we find many and it's worth a search! Is this perhaps a 'corrupted' Burgundy or even Burgoyne?
There are at leasttwo Floydmarriages in early Virginia of interest..... the first below is most likely John's parents.Damon Floyd, <http://damonfloyd.com> notes these in his Floyd marriages compilation on the web, and gave the citations in March, 2003 to Larry Reno, <lrrden@earthlink.net>, who kindly shared them:
John Floyd, m. Mary Berry, bef. 1678, in Va.,Will Book 12, Pg. 290 Northampton, Va., mentions wife Mary.
Could Edward Floyd be the true father of William, b abt 1721?
Edward (could this be John?)Floyd, m. Michael (Burgany) Harris, bet. 1696-17132nd marriage for Michael; Will Deed Book 1688-1697 Henrico Co., Va. Pg. 637 - "I John Burgany as marrying Michael Harris, entered 6/6/1696. Will & Deed Book Henrico Co., Va. 1710-1714Pg. 213, Inventory of J. Burgany Recorded 4/6/1713.(On this last citation, Larry notes that there might be an issue, in that the"Burgany, Burgomy, Burgaine, Berge" family shows her as Michal Harris, married to John Burgany, c. 1696, Henrico Co., Va.John Burgany died c. 6 April 1713 in Henrico Co., Va. and his Will was admitted to probate, witnessed by his wife (Michal) and Edward Floyd. That family also shows her second marriage to a Richard Parker bef. 1730 in Henrico or Goochland Cos., Va.See also Rootsweb Archives, Karen Clark, 03 Jan 2000 FLOYD-L concerning John Burgany, Edward Floyd, and Richard Parker.
Lastly, there is a record of a John Floyd in the Albemarle County records of August 8th, 1749 (Albemarle County Wills and Deeds No. 1, 1748-1752, pp 146-147) where"Abraham Webb hath given unto Abraham Webb and to his heirs one certain parcel of land in Albemarle County containing Four Hundred acres lying on boath sides of Glover's Road between the lines of Majr Geo. Carrington, John Floyd, Hugh Moor and others..." Albemarle gave up lands to Amherst later in 1761.
Notes for MICHAL HARRIS:
Dr. Susan Clark Slaymaker, <scs@csus.edu>, Professor of Geology, California State University, Sacramento, writes to Larry Reno, op. cit., that
"Michael Harris married John Burgany about 1696 and had sons John and Peter. Her first husband died in 1713. She later married Richard Parker(which is why Peter Burgany refers to his mother Mica Parker in his 1734 will). I suppose she could have been married to a Floyd in between her Burgany and Parker husbands and had a son William Floyd (maybe her husband was the Edward Floyd who administered John Burgany's estate in 1713, along with his wife Michael). It might be useful to examine the records for the period from about 1713 to 1734 or so to find evidence of an interim marriage..." (editor: I think this Edward was older and married to an earlier Mrs. Burgany).
So, we have Anna Cartlidge supposing that John Floyd married the widow Burgomy and that they are perhaps the parents of William Floyd of Amherst, born about 1721.Did she also marry Edward? Or was this a different widow Burgomy? I think so. Did she marry John at all? I have grown more interested in all this since I found that I descend from Ann Floyd, noted as the daughter of Edward and Michal. (Through her marriage to Joseph Tanner). But Ann could not have been born abt 1682, as she married Joseph Tanner in about the same year. Thus, I have her born about 1664....She is the daughter of Edward Floyd and the widow Burgomy.... but if she is married by 1682, she surely is not the child of the widow Burgomy I show as born about 1682. So Edward Floyd must be born about 1662 and married an earlier widow Burgamy, perhaps Michal's mother Michal? I will show it that way. Perhaps Edward was an uncle of John's.
It might be that Michal (or Michael), born about 1682, married first John Burgany who died before 1713. She then marries John Floyd, who may have already been previously married, and William arrives of this union in 1721 or so. His step-brothers Peter and John Burgomy are a bit older than he is. At some point John Floyd dies, and Michal then marries Richard Parker.
I think that she did not marry Edward; that was an earlier union of a Michal and Edward.
Let us suppose this, says Alex Luken, a formulation I think accurate, ot at least possible, and one I adopt in these notes, October 2006:
"Edward Floyd b. ca. 1641 m. unknown, Edward dead by 1682
Children:
1. Ann Floyd m. Joseph Tanner ca. 1682, Ann Floyd ward of James Forrest
in 1682
2.Edward Floyd m. 1st unknownca. 1690 m. 2nd Michal Harris Burgomy,
widow1705-1713"

In June court 1741, a suit was settled and recorded in Order Book 4, page 546. The suit is reported in part as follows:
A suit in Chancery Court, Goochland County between Harris Wilson and John Wilson by Richard Parker, their next friend, plaintiff, and William Bostick and Micah his wife, John Bostick, Wm. Floyd and Wm. Burgamy, defendants. The sheriff having returned the subpoenas executed on John Bostick, and he failing to appear, ordered a judgement be issued against John Bostick, Wm. Bostick and wife Micah, Wm. Floyd and Wm. Burgamy.
Alex: It is interesting to note that a deed dated 16 Apr 1755, executed about 13 years after the above suit. Harris Wilson and John Wilson (mentioned above) of Cumberland County, VA (Cumberland formed from Goochland in 1748) sold to John Bostick, for 100 pounds, 150 acres surveyed for Peter Burgamy, dec'd, it being the plantation where William Bostick now lives. This was part of 350 acres sold to Richard Wilson, dec'd, and Richard Wilson left to his two sons, Harris and John Wilson. The deed was proved in May Court 1755.
Children of JOHN FLOYD and MICHAL HARRIS are:
8. | i. | JOHN3 FLOYD III, b. Abt. 1695.
ii. | WILLIAM FLOYD36, b. Abt. 170037. |
Notes for WILLIAM FLOYD: I am conjecturing about this William, who is NOT the William born 1721 the father of Colonel John Floyd. This interesting note below from the Floyd-L site and sent to me by Alex Luken in Jun 2008 would imply this William is the child of Michal Harris Burgany who married John Floyd II (as I style him) in about 1713 after she was widowed by her husband John Burgany's death. If this be so, the following note makes some sense, and concerns a William Floyd who moved to NC. Puzzling is the mention of the Pedlar River where William Floyd b 1721 owned land also.....
