In the Council Bluffs, Iowa Nonpareil on Nov 23, 1909:
E.J. Jeffords of Oelwein, brakeman on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul, was caught and crushed between two cars while at work at Manila, Ia, between 3 and 4 o'clock Tuesday morning and died a few hours later in Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in this city.The Body was removed to Cutler's morgue and will be shipped to Oelwein for burial.The freight train on which Jeffords was working stopped at Manilato do some switching and in some manner he was caught between two box cars.Just how the accident happened no one knows, for he was alone at the time.Members of the crew heard his cries and rushed to his assistance to find him unconscious.A special train was made up and he was hurriedly brought to Council Bluffs and taken to the hospital here.Dr. W.B. Droper of Manila, accompanied Jeffords here and upon arrival in this city Dr. Donald Macrae was also summoned.Jeffords died shortly after arriving at the hospital, just as he was being put on the operating table.Jeffords was 26 years old and is survived by a wife and baby.

Mrs. Olga Jeffords, wife of brakeman E.J. Jeffords of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul railroad, who was killed early Tuesday morning at Manilla, came to council bluffs from her home in Oelwein Wednesday morning and is at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Clementsen, 2230 SouthSixth Street.Mrs. Elnora Jeffords and Roy Jeffords, a brother, accompanied her to the city.The funeral will be held here Friday afternoon from the Clementsen residence.
