Beville and Related Families of Florida & SE USA

This is a search of the descendants of Essex Beville and related families. Please note there are many variations of the spelling of Beville and may be used interchangeably either correctly or incorrectly:Bevil, Bevill, Beville, Bevel, Bevell, Beuil.These changes may have occurred due to poor writing or faded records.An "e" or and extra "l" can appear at the end on the whim of a family head or the result of swirling script.For whatever reasons, all of these names have been proven the same. The main sources of my search are the two publications of Asselia Strobhar Lichliter (whom I met personally): "700 Years of the Beville Family - The Lives and Times of 18 Generations of the Beville Family of Huntingdonshire, England" (published 1976) and "Pioneering with the Beville and Related Families in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida" (published 1982), to which I also contributed.My research also includes personal documentation of some Florida cemeteries; word-of-mouth and written recollections of family members; pictures, Bibles and other family documents; and local histories of Florida towns and counties. To date, I have entered names of the descendants of Granville Beville Sr, son of Robert II and Sarah (Williams-Hudson) Beville, born in Georgia on October 29, 1785. I am also actively looking for information on the following surnames:Collins, Hall, Culbreath, Greer and Carroll in the general southeastern United States. I welcome any information or comments you may have regarding any information presented and especially anything you may have to add. During my 2002 trip I was able to completely document two cemeteries in Hamilton County, FL.You may contact me for printed copies. 2003 REUNION:We had a better turnout, some of the same faces and some new faces.There was plenty of good food and good times shared by all.Mary Harrison of the G.B. UDC Chapter had a wonderful Civil War flag display she was preparing for the Sumter County 150th birthday celebration held at the end of March. A flyer requesting donations to help repair the Beville Family Plot in Center Hill, FL helped raise the funds needed to remove an old live oak tree destroyed by lightening.Pictures are under Family Photos. Thank you so very much for your support.The project was a complete success. With the sanction of the Bushnell Public Library and Bushnell City Hall, I began my photo documentation of Evergreen Cemetery.I have been able to take photos and notes of most of the gravesites from the west side to the bell tower.To date I have only logged 200 names and pictures from Section I (just a small fraction of the notes taken).I am in the process of adding my research to FindAGrave.com. In 2004, Mom and I took a trip to Savannah and across Georgia specifically in search of my grandfather's ancestors ... and of course any Bevilles we might run into, especially in Savannah and Valdosta. I documented the cemetery of my grandfather's family in Wilkinson County.In 2006 I returned to document another cemetery in Wilkinson County.I am still compiling data. Due to problems updating my database on this website, it has been removed until further notice.The annual newsletter is not longer being published for lack of input from the readership. The Beville Family Reunion will no longer be held in Sumter County, FL since Mom has moved to Virginia with me and no one has stepped forward to host it in my absence.Any interest, contact the Granville Beville Chappter of UDC in Bushnell, FL (link below). Beville Family Plot - 2001 (68 KB) Inside the walled area showing several tombstones.Granville & Patience are on either side of the tall monument shaded in the middle of the photograph. Granville Beville Jr. (29 KB) A large original of this portrait hangs in the Sumter County Courthouse. Sumter County Courthouse before 1925 (45 KB) This has been described as one of the most beautiful courthouses in the state.More recent expansion has been true to the original design. Methodist Church 1966 (55 KB) Picture taken shortly before building was torn down for new church to be built. Evergreen Cemetery Arch (48 KB) Many family members and friends are buried in this beautiful southern cemetery loactaed in Bushnell, Sumter County, Florida. Dade Battlefield Entrance 1925 (14 KB) Ralph F. Collins sold the land for this park.It has been the site of many family gatherings. Granville Bevill Chapter of UDC (73 KB) These are the founding memebers of the UDC Chapter named after Granville Beville Jr.The article appeared in the Sumter County Times. Beville Family Plot, Center Hill, FL May 2001 (13 KB) Many graves, some with elaborate markers, lie under this graceful old oak tree near where Granville Beville Jr settled to raise his family. Beville Family Plot, March 2003 (67 KB) Lightening struck the tree during a storm in 2003.No damage had been done to markers or the fence at that time. Beville Family Plot - another shot of the damage (48 KB) Donations helped defray the costs of the delicate procedure of removing the debris without causing irreparable damage.
