From Billie Reynolds:
Andrew Carmichael Babcock
On June 28, 1922, I was born the third child of Ernest and Bessie Babcock in a one room cabin on the place where Charles now lives.A new house was built the Summer of 1922, which is now the home of Charles and Zola.
Some of the things I remember as I was working to become school age.I would go out and take a nap during the day which usually caused a big hunt.
I remember one time Russ and I were exploring the Woods house when we encountered a skunk, after it was over Dad had both of us wading in a pond the rest of the afternoon.
The first five years of my education was achieved in the Juniper School, a one room school where the enrollment was from 10 to a high of 32 the year that the railroad was built. The school had one teacher and eight grades. We had to ride two miles to school across the Tony Avilla ranch at that time, now the John Britten ranch. On the ride we encountered floods as well as all types of weather.Once I froze both my ears in a snow storm on the way home.
While racing with Russ one nigh for the barn door, I fell off my horse and broke my leg, I was eight years old at the time.
In the spring of 1933, Mr. Avilla locked the gates so we had to walk to school the last two months of that year.
They closed the Juniper school that summer so we had to go to Bieber that fall.Russ got a special license to drive to school so we only had to use horses when the roads were bad in the winter. When there was snow we used a sleigh but then it melted in the spring we had to use the spring wagon to get through the mud.Usually it was about Easter before we could make it to town with the car.One morning while trudging up the road with our team and spring wagon the Jones children were riding ahead of us, three of them on two horses, when the wagon hammer came out, turning the team loose with the neckyoke and double trees. The team ran straddle of the horse with Jim and Clara on it, upending the horse, kids, and all in the ditch full of snow, no one was hurt but plenty scared. The team continued on to Bieber where Charlie Snell caught them and brought them back so we could go on to school.
I graduated from grammar school in May of 1936.
On March 1, 1938, Dad pulled out of the company with Lester and Arad Babcock, my uncles, so I went over and stayed with Uncle Lester and Aunt Frances until the grass came as most of the hay was over there.I had to milk Dads part of the cows, about 15 head, which meant getting up at 4:30 am, milking them, riding my horse to school, then in the evening it was usually 9:30 pm or later after milking and cleaning everything before getting to bed. After we brought the cows home, then I would take the milk to the cheese factory on my way to school then after school it was get home to clean the barn, wash the cans and buckets before supper so we could milk after supper.
I played basketball for four years, was team captain of Junior or Senior years. On the days that I had a basketball game I would take my saddle horse to school so I could get home after the game. When we played at Cedarville it was usually 3:00 or 4:00 am when I got home.I also played baseball my Junior and Senior years, we won the league championship.
I graduated from High School in June 1940, so ended my formal education.
I worked on the ranch mostly at home sometimes I worked for some of the neighbors to help get their corps in.
I was drafted into the Army in October 1942, where I served in the States for about 2 years, mostly as an instructor in the training camps in Texas and Florida.I was shipped to the South Pacific in early 1945, our company was attached to the 20th Air Force stationed on Guam and Titian. Most of the plans were B29s used to bomb Japan. Both of the Atomic Bombs were loaded at Titian about a mile from my quarters.I was with a truck company so about all we did was load planes.
I was shipped back to the states in early 1946, and was discharged from the service on February 9, 1946.
After my service tour I settled down to a life on the ranch with Dad and my brother Russel, Raymond and Otis.I worked for Thompson in the winter feeding cows and riding colts.
I married Dorotha Cessna on October 22, 1948, and settled down to a life of ranching and raising a family.
Peggy was born August 3, 1949, Mike on October 20, 1950 and Patty on October 24, 1951, so the next few years was spent enjoying and raising our family on the ranch.
I was elected to the school board in 1958 and spent a lot of my evenings the next 9 years establishing and operating a united school district in the valley.
Dad retired from the ranch in 1962, and Chet and Charles bought Raymond out so Chet, Charles and I worked as partners until 1969, when we all went on our own.
Mike and I worked together operating the ranch until 1979, when Ray and Peggy came back to help operate the ranch. We rented Chets ranch in 1976, so the extra help was really needed to keep the operation going.
Our first grandchild was born November 28, 1979.Peggy and Ray are now planning a home here on the ranch which we hope to build this summer.
