Notes for Ebenezer Paddock:
When Ebenezer was five years old, his father came to Preble County, Ohio. From his earliest years, he was inured to the hardships of pioneer life. He, with his brothers and a boy's love of adventure andmany a good hunt did they have after turkey, deer and smaller game with which the surrounding forest teemed.
One day after Ebenezer grew to manhood, he had a very heated argument with his father after which heshouldered his ax and left home, telling his father that he would come back some day and buy him out. He did come back and bought the old homestead and built the frame annex to the original brick house.
While married toLuranna, there were eight children born to them.
In December, 1837, Luranna died leaving Ebenezer and the children very lonely. He left his children with neighbors and went on horseback to visit relatives south of Indianapolis.
On his return he was so homesick that when he neared the old home he said to himself"Dear old Four Mile Creek, I smell you now". (This is his own story).
In another home not far away, a widow, Mallinda Perkins Gard was visiting relatives. A cousin said to her, "You had better go to the Baptist Meeting Sunday for Ebenezer Paddack is home and will be there. But Malinda said that she had no suitable dress to wear. The cousin lent her a black silk dress and Malinda went to the meeting and Ebenezer was there. And the next Sunday they were married. In April of this year (year is unknown, but probably 1838), Ebenezer moved to Johnson County, Indiana, but came back to the old homestead in June, 1841 where he lived the remainder of his life. To the union of he and Malinda were born five children, Malinda brought four (4) children with her to the Paddack home, so Ebenezer helped to raise 17 children.
