1961 article in Dayton Journal Herald by Marion Esterline:Keeping Active, Busy Adds Years, Brookville's Sam Hoy, 91, Claims.
Brookville: "Keeping active and busy adds years to an elderly persons's life," claims Samuel Moses (Sam) Hoy, 91, of 241 Cusick Avenue, Brookville.
Sam has been doing just that. He shovels snow off the walks and steps at his home. "I don't mind the cold weather---just dress for it," says Sam.I walk up town for groceries and to visit friends, watch wrestling and boxing matches on TV, and read everything I get hold of, including a daily and Sunday paper. "Cooked a pot of beans yesterday. Make soups, fry bacon and boil eggs. Handiest are the frozen dinners. My daughters often bring me dishes of food." Pausing to push a quantity of chewing tobacco between his lips,he continued, "Daughters often look in on me. Some wanted me to stay in Florida. I'm used to Brookville. This is my home and I like it here."
He doesn't drink. He plants his garden, takes care of the flowers and mows the lawn with a push mower. He reported 280 tulips blooming at one time last spring.
A constant companion is Sparky, a three year old parakeet of many colors, who follows Sam around the house and outside, too.
He went by bus to Florida in December for a month's visit with two daughters and two granddaughters. "They hauled me around to see all the sights in southern Florida," he reported.
Before his second wife died last Nov. 16, they visited about half the states of the United States. His wife did the driving during many of the recent years. He sold his car recently. A very active man, he wears glasses and a hearing aid.
Sam says he was born in Virginia on a farm, farmed in the Brookville area until he was 50 years old. Then he got a job in a school supply house, Paine Publishing Co., Dayton and worked there 34 years, until he was past 86 years old.
He built a house in Brookville in 1922. "Did all the work although I had never built anything bigger than a chicken coop," recalled Sam.
Sam has four daughters and one son son living as well as many grandchildren. His daughters are Mrs. Emma White, Mrs. Martha Roselius, Mrs. Myrtle Wilson, Mrs. Virginia Dadisman; His son is Lawrence Hoy.
