Notes for JOHN W. SWANGER:
John and his two brothers were living with their maternal grandparents, the John Grove family, in Union, Huntingdon, PA in 1850.Mr. Philip C. Keiffer provided the following information about John Grove.He was born around 1780, according to the 1850 census.He was married to Mary Rupert.His son David was born in Crawford Co, PA (I subsequently located the family in Sadsbury, Crawford, PA in the 1830 census).The moved to Cumberland County in 1833 and lived between Shippensburg and Newville (this is important because William Swanger married Catherine Grove in Newville in 1835).They later moved to Huntingdon Co, PA (they are listed in Henderson, Huntingdon, PA in 1840 and in Union, Huntingdon, PA in 1850, with the three Swanger boys in their household.These facts, taken together, make it clear that the Catherine Grove that married William Swanger was the daugher of John and Mary Grove and that they raised her three sons.
A close inspection of the 1840 census listing for this family strongly suggests that the three Swanger boys were already part of the John Grove household in that year as well.The household includes a male aged 50-60 (John), a female aged 50-60 (Mary), three males aged 15-20 (Samuel, John, and David), one female aged 20-30 (the unidentified sister; in 1830 they had two daughters 10-15), three boys 0-5 (probably John, Samuel, and David Swanger), as well as a female 5-10 and one under 5 (these could be Rebecca Mackin and Mary Weston who were with them in 1850, aged 14 and 6 respecitvely).
It is interesting that when William Swanger's father died early in life, three of William's siblings, Elizabeth, Sarah, and John, were appointed a guardian: Michael Grove.This indicates that this Swanger family and the Grove family were allied in some way.Michael Grove's parents, from my research, appear to be a George Swanger and Eve.It's possible that the Eve who was William's mother was a sister of Michael Grove, in which case she would have been named after her mother.That would provide explanation for Michael becoming guardian for three of her children after her husband's death.
