Note: After marrying, William and Ester went to Illinois.
After serving in the militia, William was granted property by a congressional
act dated March 22 1852. It was titled "An Act ToMake Bounty Land Warrants
Assignable". During President Franklin Pierce's term William was granted land
patent Warrant No. 7053 for 40 acres of land located in the NE quadrant of
the SE quarter of section 9 in Township 14 North of Range 29 West. William and
Hetty began their journey to NW AR, camping at indian camps along the way.
The property is located in what is known as the White House Community, SE of
Elkins AR in Washington Co. Also known as the Middle Fork Valley (of the
white river), the area had been sparsely inhabited by indians, presumably
Cherokee, before"white people" began to settle in the 1820's. Although
the native indians did not use the White House Cemetery for burial,some of
those interred there are of indian ancestry.
Their son John was just an infant when they made the journey from Illinois to
AR. At one of the camps an indian woman noticed the baby's red eyes. In an
attempt to provide relief, she applied a concoction that ended up costing him
his sight for life. John did however, lead an otherwise fulfilling
life, fathering at least 8 children.
