Descendants of Jared Talbot
1.Jared1 Talbot1,2 was born Abt. 1640 in ?, and died September 17, 1686 in South Purchase of Taunton, (now Dighton) MA.He married Sarah Andrews April 01, 1664 in Taunton, MA, daughter of Henry Andrews and Mary Pool.
Notes for Jared Talbot:
The ancestry of Jared Talbot is not known, but there is speculation that it may be Irish, with the route to New England being by way of Barbados. An anonymous manuscript, entitled "The Talbot Family", mentions a William Talbot as one of the British exiles with the Pilgrims at Leyden and as of record as a witness to the marriage of Richard Masterson of Sandwich to Mary Goodall of Leicester in November of 1619.It is possible that Moses Talbot, who was killed on the Kennebec River in 1634 while a member of Plymouth Colony's trading party there (which included John Alden - see John Alden notes), and Peter Talbot, recorded in 1636 as formerly a servant of Edward Doty, were his sons. This Peter Talbot was presumably eighteen to twenty-five years old at the time and might be considered the possible father of Jared Talbot, and also Samuel Talbot, who married probably at Bristol, Rhode Island, 1 March 1689, Priscilla Southworth.Peter Talbot of Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay, who is the subject of another printed genealogy, is a different man altogether from those mentioned above.
Jared aquired a considerable amount of property in the Broad Cove area of old Taunotn, now Dighton, where he was the first settler. They were the only family living there before King Philip's War, during which they were forced to flee to Taunton by boat [Lane, 16].The site of their house is on Elm Street, opposite the emetery.A monument marks the site.
A document dated March 6, 1676 stated that the soldiers of "Jerudd Talbut" were supposed to pay £31. to James Walker for a kettle they took from him.It is difficult to say what sort of money this debt was to be paid in, for the amount on the face of it appears to be extremely high.On the same day, Jared served on a jury which aquitted one Mary Ingham of a charge of witchcraft."Jehud Talbutt" was one of a group which found Timothy Poole drowned in a pond on November 18, 1677.The only deed of record now extant which involved Jared was dated in 1683 when he sold property to Philip King of Weymouth, MA.This deed was recorded in November 1686 by his widow, Sarah.Mentions in published works of a James Talbot early in Dighton and of a marriage in 1680 between a Jared Talbot and Elizabeth Hathaway are in error.
Notes for Sarah Andrews:
On August 2, 1664, both Sarah and Jared signed for her share of her father's estate [vide Plymouth Colony Court records].
